Main purpose of job:

This role is critical to supporting British Embassy Khartoum’s understanding of the Sudanese economy and political economy and to ensuring a portion of UK ODA budget is spent on working with non-state actors to improve economic literacy in Sudan.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Lead on strategic management of a programme of work to support non-state actors in becoming more economically literate. (This will account for approximately 50% of the work).
  • Lead on economic analysis of macroeconomic trends and provide advice on how the British Embassy in Sudan should respond.  This could include analysis of priority sectors for the Sudanese economy such as agriculture, gold and oil and will include weekly shifts in macroeconomic trends, policy and relevant politics.  (35%)
  • Invest in building a network of contacts across the economy and international community in Sudan to enable you to understand economic trends and communicate these to BEK. (10%)
  • Provide support across the office for key economic issues such as results monitoring and value for money analyses.  (5%)

Strategic guidance of £1-3m of ODA, but no PRO or SRO responsibility.

  • Degree in Economics
  • Fluent in written and spoken Arabic and English
  • Experience working in the field of economics
  • Track record of building sound relationships.
  • Masters in Economics;
  • Experience with ODA programmes.

Learning and development opportunities :

The successful candidate will work with 2 more senior economists in the team and can benefit from quality assurance and feedback on their economic analysis. The role also provides opportunity to show leadership on a portion of a programme, making decisions, building networks and demonstrating change.

This is initially a 6 month maternity cover role. It is possible the duration of the role could be extended but not guaranteed.

Working hours:

Sunday – Wednesday 08:00 – 16:00, Thursday 08:00 – 14:30
