We are seeking a dynamic and detail oriented Vice-Consul to lead our busy team providing consular assistance to British nationals in the Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virgina, and West Virginia. Based in Washington, but with regular travel across the region, the successful applicant will run our front-line consular services at the British Embassy, manage and deliver an outreach programme to advise and inform on our wider consular priorities, and oversee strategic stakeholder management to help deliver excellent consular services through stronger external partnerships.  The job-holder is assisted by one Pro-Consul.      

   

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Managing the provision of consular assistance in accordance with current guidelines, including visiting British nationals in hospital or in jail, and providing support to family members following bereavement, a child abduction or custody matter, and providing advice and assistance following a rape or sexual assault.
  • Overseeing casework and managing to a satisfactory conclusion ensuring service standards are fully implemented;
  • Liaising with US authorities, members of the public and their legal representatives, airlines and tour operators, and British Government Departments in order to achieve strategic goals.
  • Designing, costing and implementing an effective outreach strategy for the consular district and monitoring and reporting budget expenditure;
  • Proactively leading on consular issues at the Embassy, including representing the consular view at key internal meetings and activities;
  • Representing the British government at consular related events, including some public speaking duties.
  • Maintaining close links with local authorities including, but not limited to, law enforcement, correctional facilities, medical examiners, hospitals, morgues and mental health facilities.
  • Maintaining close and proactive dialogue with the Consular Regional Operations Manager on matters within the consular district.
  • Processing emergency passport applications and requests for notarial services.
  • Exceptionally, participate in call-out arrangements for emergency cases out of hours when our Global Response Centre in London requests additional support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • The successful candidate must have 6-8 years of relevant work experience (to include working with the public).
  • A relevant Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience in a relevant field, is required.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels.
  • Initiative, drive & determination.
  • Superior problem solving skills, sound judgement, common sense and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to prioritise, effectively manage, and execute multiple tasks.
  • Strong team player and effective line manager.
  • A willingness to undertake travel on business for approximately 10% of duty time, sometimes overnight and at short notice.
  • A valid driving licence and willingness to use your personal car for official duties (with expenses reimbursed).
  • The successful candidate must also be available to attend a Consular training course in the UK within the first 3 months of employment.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or A or NATO visa holders with EAD cards*. *A visas or NATO visas with EAD cards are acceptable at the Embassy, Consulates, and British Defence Staff (BDS) outposts.
