Summary:

To lead on the High Commission’s political work, including: delivering political support across the High Commission and particularly to the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner; political reporting; management of high level visits and events; management of the Chevening Scholarships activity; management of Global Britain and other programme fund activity.

This is a fantastic and varied job working in one of the key diplomatic missions in Kingston.

The main focus of the job is supporting the work of the High Commission in working with Jamaican partners to tackle serious organised crime, promoting trade and investment links between the UK and Jamaica, and promoting British values and understanding of the United Kingdom. The jobholder will also lead on other aspects of UK/Jamaica co-operation, such as high level visits.

The jobholder will be expected to bring insight about Jamaica and Jamaican politics to colleagues in the High Commission, working closely with individual teams on their needs and interests. The jobholder will need to follow events in Jamaica closely, getting behind the headlines and engaging with a wide range of contacts.

As part of that engagement, the jobholder will lead on a number of key programmes. This includes the Chevening Scholarship programme, which sends around 15 Masters level students to the UK every year and has over 400 Jamaican alumni.   Other funds include the Global Britain Fund, used to run large public events such as the UK-Jamaica Fair held in February 2018 and support engagement outside Kingston.
