Main purpose of job:

This is a great time to join the British Government team in Australia as the strong relationship between the two countries is amplified by the impending Free Trade Agreement. 

The purpose of this role is to proactively attract investment from Western Australian companies into the UK.

The role will support the UK Government’s work in Australia by leading, developing and delivering investment services for high growth and globally scalable companies from Western Australia. You will provide expansion strategy support and account management to Australian companies entering and expanding in the UK. These companies include all sectors and sizes, ranging from tech start-ups to large corporates.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

This exciting and engaging role requires identification and provision of strategic support for innovative Australian companies with globally scalable products or services. It involves formulating and executing strategies aimed at generating leads for Foreign Direct Investment and Capital Investment attraction from Western Australia into the UK.

You will have expertise in strategy, marketing, planning and execution. This will include building capability, identifying and providing strategic introductions, market analysis, and commissioning research. Your role is focused on developing new commercial channels to market and identifying growth opportunities. Essential to the role will be the ability to communicate UK information and materials to each company. Beneficial to the role is a knowledge of critical minerals and supply chains.

The role also requires liaison with UK Government HQ and marketing teams. The role will require attendance and presentations at events and relationship building at certain industry forums, and require an ability to communicate effectively. Existing relationships with the start-up ecosystem and tech industry to actively support and leverage outcomes will be viewed favourably. The role will include an element of domestic and international travel, as well as for learning and development.

Keen business acumen is critical, as is the ability to work alongside CEOs. You will have to work with a variety of businesses from start-ups to large corporate investors. You will have superior communication, business consulting and relationship management skills with the ability to build rapport quickly.  You will understand how to develop and leverage industry networks specifically.

A superb relationship manager and team player, you will also be part of a global organisation working with Her Majesty’s Government and team colleagues in other states across Australia, New Zealand, APAC and the UK to achieve the British Government's strategic objectives.  The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in Australia and New Zealand with UK-based sector team colleagues, UK regional team colleagues, the Science and Innovation team, trade teams and a centralised investment services team – who each play a supporting role to you by providing introductions, economic data and research.

This role may involve the management of direct line-reports in Perth who contribute to the overall target (as well as any temporary interns that may be recruited). The management function will also require sound administration and accurate, budgeting and forecasting in line with value for money.

The role will include some strategic support and assistance to the broader DIT team (including with trade exports colleagues), the British Consulate staff in Perth and the wider Australia Network.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):  

Management of team budget for travel, events and expenses

A marketing budget managed in partnership with the Marketing team.

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, or in business development.
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment
  • Experience in scaling businesses, market entry and international business
  • Ability to develop and maintain networks with senior decision makers
  • Strong inter-personal networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • IT literate
  • Ability to work proactively and collaboratively within a team
  • High level organisational skills and ability to work at pace under pressure to achieve results

Language requirements:  

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent  

  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK.
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment).
  • Some knowledge of investment decision processes.
