Who we are:

The Governor's office of the United Kingdom in Gibraltar is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

The mission of the Office of the Governor is to support the Governor and Commander-in-Chief in carrying out his constitutional role and duties as His Majesty’s Representative in Gibraltar. The Governor has special responsibilities for the conduct in Gibraltar of external affairs; defence; internal security and certain functions in relation to public offices. The Office of the Governor also supports dialogue between His Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar and His Majesty’s Government in the UK on a range of issues, to further develop the modern partnership between Britain and Gibraltar.

The Residence Chef will be responsible for food preparation, including the purchasing of all food commodities required with regard to quality, sourcing, purchasing, collection, delivery and in accordance with and timed to coincide with daily, weekly and function menus, schedules.

Your role entails:

  • Correct and effective cleaning and maintenance of all kitchen equipment and utensils in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and in compliance with Food Safety Act regulations as applicable to FCDO Residences and public catering events
  • Working to timed schedules, carrying out the preparations and cooking for all meals for the Governor and his guests and official visitors, as well as for all official and income-generation functions
  • Provide advice and guidance regarding menus, create appropriate menus which take into account dietary and nutritional factors for all social events and the Governor’s private daily requirements, as well as the personal dietary requirements of guests
  • Maintain correct and appropriate storage and stock control of all purchased food commodities in accordance with FSA regulations
  • Work within the Residence Team and support the Residence Manager in their objectives of effective service delivery, whilst adhering to the Office’s Charter of Behaviours
  • During time of staff absences (if required) assist with moving items of furniture in preparation for functions, support functions front/back of the house. Provide support to other residence staff where needed and when requested by the Residence Manager
  • Government Procurement Card holder, which will be used for official purchases and accounting processes in accordance to FCDO guidelines.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken upwards of C1 level as per CEFR*)
  • At least 3 years' previous experience working in a busy kitchen/fine dining preparation
  • Certificated formal training (attended a technical cooking school or completed specialist cooking course)
  • Readiness to work flexibly, including evenings
  • Excellent communication, organisational, planning and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent kitchen management and food hygiene control
  • Capability to flex between small-scale lunches etc through to large events such as receptions
  • Ability to work independently and manage budget allocation

Good to have:

  • Spanish language proficiency is desirable
  • Cooking experience in a international hotel, restaurant or a diplomatic mission
  • Food Safety Act training
  • Health and Safety (HACCP) training

This is a part-time position with an initial fixed term contract of 24 months of 25 (gross) working hours per week.  

The successful candidate will receive a monthly salary of £1045.00 Gross (12 instalments).

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of six months.

Staff recruited locally by the Office of the Governor in Gibraltar is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

Learning and Development opportunities: Food safety training courses and Mandatory FCDO courses.

Working Patterns: This role will offer flexible working between the hours of 0600 and 2200, subject to diary requirements.
