The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing over 14,000 people in nearly 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations to promote UK interests and global security, including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

The Digital Communications Officer will lead and implement all aspects of our digital communications. Social media is a key tool for us to explain our work and reach out to different audiences in Brussels and the EU institutions. The role requires strong social media and digital communications skills (technical and creative), good strategic awareness, excellent collaboration skills and flexibility to adapt as the role evolves. It will also require close collaboration with policy colleagues across UKMis, with Government Departments in London and on occasion with partners outside the Mission. This is an exciting time to join UKMis as we approach the end of the transition period and establish our new partnership with the EU.


Main responsibilities:

Lead on UKMis Digital communication strategy, as part of our wider communications engagement.

Work closely with colleagues in the Mission and in Whitehall Departments to understand our policy objectives and develop successful digital strategies and campaigns. Have good strategic awareness to spot opportunities and manage risks. Provide advice on appropriate digital communications to reach target audiences;

Use a range of digital communication channels to implement and reach our target audiences. Manage UKMis’ Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn accounts and Gov.uk website, creating high impact and engaging content including photos, videos, infographics;

Evaluate the success of our digital communications activities, and identify ways to continue to improve our impact. Demonstrate a practical understanding of emerging digital services, tools and trends, including knowledge of techniques for optimising digital content and A/B testing. Deliver weekly monitoring of social media;

Be a source of expertise and best practice for UKMis. Train, mentor, advise and encourage colleagues on the best use of social media and digital communications, including senior officials who run their own social media channels. Help increase knowledge across the building to ensure digital communications goes hand in hand with policy;

Build relationship with other digital communication officers in Brussels and London, in EU institutions, EU member states and third country missions to identify opportunities for collaboration.


English language written skills ( *Equivalent to C1 level);

Strong communication skills;

Strong digital media skills, including ability to design and deliver digital campaigns using appropriate online media;

Experience of communicating through a range of social media platforms;

Video filming and editing experience, including subtitling (Premiere Pro, iMovie, other);

Adobe Creative Cloud skills: Photoshop and Premiere Pro essential; InDesign and Illustrator desirable;

Ability to run analytics on digital activities and produce reports on Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram content;


- WordPress or similar Content management (CMS) system.




Strong news sense and understanding of the EU and of the UK government;

Animation and design skills (Animate CC, After Effects);

This is is a full-time, for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.The monthly gross salary for this position is €4,243.29 B3(L) level. 

In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13 month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, hospitalisation insurance, reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Visa/passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Additional requirements may become necessary after 31st December 2020.
