Main purpose of job:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government department charged with securing UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade. In the Philippines, DIT works with colleagues in the British Embassy Manila and other partners to deliver trade objectives as part of the Asia Pacific (APAC) network and against an ambitious Regional Trade Plan. In APAC, DIT has over 200 staff working across 13 countries stretching from New Zealand to Myanmar, led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) Natalie Black.

The post advertised is for a Trade and Investment Manager based at the British Embassy in Manila, working primarily on trade promotion as part of the team that leads on the Infrastructure and Defence & Security sectors.  The role will have a particular focus on the renewable energy, water and environmental sectors. Identifying and addressing sector relevant market issues will be part of the responsibilities.  Sector responsibilities may evolve over time.

The job holder will also work with  the Country Director to promote inward investment to the UK and will have line management responsibility for an administrative support officer. The role reports to the Senior Trade Manager leading the infrastructure and defence & security team.

The role will support UK companies who are already exporting to the Philippines, as well as draw in new exporters for market opportunities. S/he is expected to possess project management skills to effectively plan and execute innovative trade/business development activities for identified sectors.  S/he will also be required to attend official functions outside of office hours, and undertake occasional travel (international and domestic).

The successful candidate will be joining a high-performing team and will engage with a diverse range of UK businesses and sector stakeholders in the public and private sector – locally, regionally and back in the UK.  S/he will deliver DIT initiatives in market and collaborate with regional colleagues as part of an APAC infrastructure team led out of Singapore.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Deliver an ambitious set of annual trade targets in covered sectors.
  • Develop a strong network of public and private sector stakeholders in relevant sectors to effectively deliver trade support to UK companies pursuing project opportunities in market.
  • Conceptualise a strategy for sector/s engagement, and implement activites with the goals of generating trade opportunities, reducing market access barriers, building relationships, and highlighting the strengths of the UK’s proposition.
  • Collaborate with wider embassy colleagues, including regional and HQ colleagues and with other UK government agencies, to support UK prosperity campaigns and economic objectives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of sector trends and capabilities, incentives, and centres of excellence in both the Philippines and UK.
  • Work with  the Country Director on inward investment work that involves the identification and presentation of investment opportunities, and developing strategic investor relationships.
  • Line manage support staff to maximise delivery and provide continuous development.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): Line management responsibility for a Trade Officer (A2) who provides technical support to wider infrastructure and defence & security team, as well as DIT finance administration support to the Country Director. 

The applicant should have a related degree in business, economics or finance, and with at least 3 years relevant work experience (eg on international trade, business development, marketing, etc)

Ideally, existing expertise and network in outlined sectors will be useful.  Additional technical qualifications will also be acknowledged.
