To cover a period of maternity leave, we are looking for a new colleague to join the Department for International Trade (DIT) team at the British Embassy in The Hague for twelve months, starting in early December. 

As senior trade adviser you help UK companies to gain export contracts in the Netherlands and work with colleagues in the UK to develop and deliver strategic export campaigns. In this role you support UK businesses in the Defence, Security and Technology sectors entering and growing sales in the Dutch market. Your daily work is a combination of proactive and reactive export promotion work in combination with market intelligence reporting.

You will:

  • Proactively identify export opportunities (demand scoping, tenders)  and share them with your UK network

  • Provide direct support to companies reaching out to DIT with questions about exporting

  • Engage with and grow your Dutch network to open doors for suppliers

  • Contribute to developing long term export strategies and campaigns

  • Organise meetings and trade events to connect suppliers with potential buyers

  • Promote products and services made in the UK

  • Inform colleagues in the UK through market briefings

Due to the nature of the Defence, Security & Technology sectors you have a unique profile in the team as your work is strongly linked with that of the Defence and Policy teams at the Embassy. You will be working on long term trade promotion strategies which are directly linked to the Dutch government policies in this area.

The role is based at our office at the British Embassy in The Hague which is part of a worldwide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.

DIT supports UK companies trading internationally as well as foreign companies looking to establish or expand operations in the UK through the provision of tailored information and guidance. The team based in The Hague helps Dutch companies invest in the UK and British companies export to the Netherlands.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Building partnerships with and account managing key Dutch and UK stakeholders in the public and private sector, focusing on the areas of Defence, Security & Technology.
  • Conducting market research and preparing periodical briefing reports for your sectors.
  • Organising and delivering one major trade event in early 2023 and supporting other events to deliver the trade agenda in your sectors.
  • Working with other Trade colleagues in delivering cross-sectoral trade promotion activities in Tech.
  • Working closely with the Defence team at the Embassy to set the agenda of trade initiatives. 

  • Fluency at C1 level in English and Dutch (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*).

  • Work experience in an international business environment

  • Work experience in a business development, market research or relevant policy role

  • A good understanding of doing business in the Netherlands

  • Work experience in, or a good understanding of, at least one of the following sectors:  Defence, Security and Technology

  • Work experience at a Dutch or British company or organisation.

  • Experience with organising an event

  • A good understanding of Dutch government policy in the fields of Defence, Security & Technology

The successful candidate will be offered a 12 month contract at EO level. The base salary for this position is € 3,855.50 gross per month, based on a working week of 36 hours.  

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in The Netherlands.  

The successful candidate will undergo a professional background check; Any job offer is also provisional to a successful security clearance check.

Under the terms of the UK/NL Double Taxation Convention (Article 18 1(b)(ii),  UK nationals who move to The Netherlands to take up their new role at the Embassy/Consulate and UKB spouse who start working at the Embassy with no previous record of working in the Netherlands since the arrival of the UKB partner they accompany,  will be placed on a tax abated salary if deemed to be eligible for Dutch income tax exemption on their salary. Qualifying staff will have no Dutch tax levied on their salary and will therefore be paid a lower salary abated by the amount of tax they would have had to pay if that local liability existed. A tax abated salary ensures a fair and comparable take home pay. Staff on tax abated salaries cannot claim tax benefits in The Netherlands but they are fully and comprehensively covered for social security and deemed to be resident local staff for all intents and  purposes.
