Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT). Our aim is to promote British trade and investment across the world, which is vital for the prosperity of the UK. DIT brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to support British business and break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed. In this role you will be deputising for Energy and Infrastructure lead at the British Embassy Tokyo. UK and Japan are committed to reaching Net Zero by 2050. Your role will in involve supporting UK/Japan trade in renewables, promoting Japanese investment into the UK’s clean energy sector and collaborating to help third countries close the infrastructure financing gap and transition to clean energy.

This is a fast paced role suited to an individual that is able to deliver on rapidly changing short term priorities, often dictated by world events and ministerial visits, while also maintaining a firm grip and driving forward longer term business and policy objectives.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

In this role:

  • You will need to develop a strong network of relationships with the UK clean energy companies, understand their business model and product offering; and help them export and partner with Japanese companies to reach our export target goals for Japan.
  • You will need to develop a strong knowledge and understanding of Japanese energy market and potential export opportunities for UK companies and systematically disseminate this information to the UK market/companies. 
  • You will also work on supporting Japanese capital investment into the UK’s clean energy and infrastructure sectors by building strong relationship with Japanese investors and showcasing to them the value of investing in the UK’s clean energy sector.
  • You will help coordinate DIT’s APAC wide work on energy exports, ensuring DIT energy sector leads in each country have a clear strategy for maximising UK clean energy exports to their country, are making full use synergies between different countries in the region to deliver their goals, arrange learning and development opportunities for the APAC energy team and making sure senior leadership team are kept up to date on direction of travel for energy exports in the APAC region.
  • You will also drive forward work to enhance UK and Japan collaboration in third country projects. This work will involve working closely with DIT team based across the world and UK to identify projects, share potential projects for work with Japan and problem solve to help any existing projects move forward.
  • You will initially line manage two members of staff and will be responsible for setting their objectives and developing the team’s objectives as part of the business planning process. In the future, you may need to line manage one more member of staff. 
  • You will take on a corporate task that delivers wider embassy objectives, proactively working with members of other teams. You will also need to take on and prepare for a crisis role.

Learning and development opportunities:

The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use 5 development days to pursue job related and personal development goals. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.

Working patterns:

The British Embassy, Tokyo supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering. This particular role allows for flexibility in start and end times, working compressed hours, part-time, remote working, and the possibility of a job share arrangement, subject to agreement with management.

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and/or
  • A minimum of 4+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example: working in government or organisation, preferably in trade or investment promotion or clean energy.
  • Good understanding of international trade promotion, capital investment and renewables/clean energy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Including written English-language communication skills.
  • Excellent networking skills and understanding of Japanese business culture.
  • People management skills and experience.

Language requirements:

  • Japanese and English Language ability
  • Fluent level English with at least business level Japanese
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience of managing a team
  • Strong knowledge or background of Japanese and/or UK clean energy trade promotion, capital investment work, and/or infrastructure policy.
