The British Embassy in Helsinki is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Adviser.

The Department for International Trade’s (DIT) Trade & Investment section works with UK-based businesses to ensure UK-based companies’ success in international markets and encourage the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice.

As member of DIT’s Trade team in Finland, the trade adviser’s role is to assist UK-based companies looking to export goods and services to Finland in major export sectors or large-scale projects. You will also be required to handle a daily flow of enquiries across various sectors. This is a client-facing role, with focus on actively reaching out to stakeholders in the UK and Finland to promote opportunities and enable UK-based companies to operate in the Finnish market.

The trade adviser is expected to deliver measurable results in the form of verified business won by the UK supply chain in Finland as a result of assistance provided. The team in Finland collaborates across borders as part of DIT’s Nordic-Baltic Network.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Independently plan and carry out sector-specific activities which lead to UK-based businesses increasing exports and winning contracts in Finland, e.g. through trade events, delegations, meet the buyer events, tailored market research, competitor analysis and matchmaking with suitable partner companies in Finland.
  • Proactively identify sector-specific export opportunities in Finland for UK-based businesses, promoting these opportunities through DIT’s digital services and by direct communication with UK-based trade associations and other industry bodies, and following up with interested companies to ensure business success and capture wins.
  • Build contacts within the Finnish business community to facilitate introduction of UK-based companies into the market and in order to identify supply chain opportunities.
  • Proficient English and Finnish (both oral and written).
  • Confidence to proactively build and engage a useful network of contacts.
  • Positive and flexible attitude.
  • Customer-focused approach.
  • Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines.
  • Some prior knowledge or experience of international business environment and trade promotion.
  • Knowledge of the Finnish economy and main industries.
  • Prior knowledge or experience of one or more of the following sectors: infrastructure, rail, construction, defence & security, advanced engineering, technology, healthcare, energy.

This is a full-time permanent contract of 36.25 hours per week. Working hours are Monday – Friday (9.00- 16.45).

The annual leave entitlement is 20 days, increasing to 25 days after one year’s service. Leave for temporary, contract or hourly-paid staff is also calculated on a pro-rata basis. The Embassy pays an annual holiday bonus. Embassy employees are entitled to a private medical scheme for basic healthcare services and to use the Embassy’s recreational facilities.

The appointment is subject to security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
