Main purpose of job:

Undertaking mechanical and electrical installation and repairing, doing maintenance works as required, especially mechanical and electrical work and ensure contractors complete works to the required standard.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Technical Works Group Lead,  you will ensure that works are completed as agreed with full and effective monitoring throughout.  
  • Highlight issues in a timely manner to your line manager (the TWG Lead) and take immediate action.
  • Take full responsibility for assigned mechanical projects, electrical repairs and renewals:
  • React to mechanical and electrical breakdowns or faults in a professional manner (applying UK standards).
  • Produce clear technical reports when required;
  • Lead on Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)  installations, maintenance and repairing, (air conditioners), identifying materials required and creating work package(s) for generator repairs and HVAC appliances to ensure they meet the UK standards. 
  • Repair white goods and generators as required.
  • Carry out electrical and mechanical assessment according to UK standards on residential and office properties.
  • Carry out planned preventive maintenance activities as per Property Compliance Assessment recommendations.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure their work is up to UK standards and complies with UK Health and Safety standards as per FCO policies

  • Experience/qualifications as a mechanic
  • Diploma in Electro-mechanical engineering or its equivalent
  • A qualification in white goods repairs
  • Experience of identifying requirements and implementing a plan to meet them
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Expereince of dealing with a variety of customers effectively
  • Good decision making skills and a willingness to take your own initiative and be proactive
  • Ability to ensure a high level of technical support to lower level technicians
  • Expertise in working both in a team and independently
  • Ability to comply with the organisation’s safety guidelines and procedures
  • Having a valid Rwanda Driving License is compulsory
  • Experience working with International Non Governmental Organisations or a Diplomatic Mission

There is ample opportunity to develop with FCO/Civil Service courses that offer world-class training in corporate service provision.  We have a generous training budget and we encourage staff to identify training to improve their performance and aid their career progression, in consultation with their line-manager.  Previous staff have studied for professional and university-based qualifications, and conducted training in the region at in the UK.

Working patterns:

Normal hours are 0800-1700 Monday to Thursday; 0800-1200 on Friday, and out of hours responses to emergencies as necessary.  We encourage applications for flexible working.
