This is a fascinating time to join the UK in New Zealand whānau at a time of unprecedented global challenges and opportunities. This fixed term position is tied to the negotiation, agreement and enforcement of the proposed UK/NZ Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and will terminate upon its completion. This exciting role will help establish the conditions for a strong, bilateral trading relationship with New Zealand. In particular you will provide economic analytical support to our UK/ NZ FTA negotiations. 

Working as part of the trade policy team, you will develop a deep knowledge of the NZ market, sectors and Government priorities, providing insight to policy development in Wellington, Auckland and London. 

You will also lead and manage projects to achieve our economic policy goals and work with the wider trade policy team to deliver programmes for visitors.

You will work closely across the Wellington High Commission, Auckland Consulate-General and London Trade Policy teams on all issues.  There is significant scope to flex the job to play to the strengths and experience of the successful candidate, and for their own future development.  The role may change and develop as the trade agreement negotiations begin and continue. There may be times when your work will flex to meet overall the High Commission priorities.

You will join a small and friendly team and enjoy working as part of the wider High Commission team, and be able to manage the challenges of working remotely with colleagues in Auckland, Canberra and London.  Equally you will be comfortable  leading on work with limited supervision.

  • Economic Analysis.  You will support the negotiating team here in Wellington through policy development preparation and analysis on specific sectors and overall economic policy issues.  You will bring your analytical skills and experience and deep understanding of NZ economic and trade related issues. Using network contacts and understanding you will provide insight to the trade and political teams and to London colleagues.  (60%)
  • Policy.  You will lead on the development and implementation of a number of economic policy projects.  You will deal directly with local, national and international interlocoters to develop market driven projects which support, meet and boost our economic policy goals, and ensure those projects are implemented and conclude successfully.  (20%)
  • Visits.  You will organise, coordinate and contribute to programmes for trade and economic  related visits and visitors, including liaison with NZ Government stakeholders (20%)
  • Experience of working on economic policy issues OR experience of working on Government trade or economic policy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to translate complex issues into a well drafted prose with clear analysis and recommendations.
  • Awareness of New Zealand’s agricultural sector and its role within trade agreements.

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000 and gaining and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.
