The Department for International Trade (DIT) is looking for a highly motivated  trade adviser to join its team in Italy, either in Rome or in Milan, to promote export opportunities for UK industry in retail, consumer goods and education. 

The trade adviser will initially be in charge of export promotion in the Consumer goods sector (including cosmetics, furniture, pet care, and technology for the retail sector). The new ideal candidate will also look at the development of the education business sector for UK companies given Italy’s significant market share in the UK English language teaching market.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for replying to commercial enquiries from UK companies regarding relevant sectors,  developing and organising a pipeline of trade opportunities, as well as promoting relevant Italian trade fairs within UK industry. 

The jobholder will be part of the new Life Sciences, Consumer Goods, export growth team. The job holder will report to a senior trade advisor in the team and will work closely with colleagues in Italy, Europe and the UK to assist with the implementation of the overall DIT Export strategy in Italy. Flexibility in the sectors of focus will be required as priorities might change should more relevant export opportunities emerge in other areas.

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Assist the UK industry to realise export opportunities in Italy in the specified sectors.
  • Analyse new business opportunities in the Italian market for UK companies, and communicate these.
  • Grow the presence of UK companies at Italian relevant international exhibitions (such as cosmoprof, zoomark etc) and actively promote the Italian market as an exporting destination in relevant sectors.
  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders in the UK (companies, DIT Headquarters and colleagues in UK regions) to identify and develop opportunities and projects to work together.
  • Develop a network of relevant stakeholders in Italy (distributors, UK investors, trade organisations etc.) involving them in wider Italy network events if/when required.
  • Work on the active identification and resolution of market access barriers to export.
  • Manage relevant information sources. Monitor and report on activity in accordance with DIT procedures, including the accurate recording of projects on DIT’s management systems.
  • Support the development and capability building of self and others through learning and development.
  • Support and work closely with colleagues for the delivery of wider Italy network priorities, including supporting the delivery of public diplomacy events and visits across Italy.
  • Be involved and actively support the wider corporate objectives of the Italy network.

*National/ international travel might be required

  • Fluency at C1 level both in English and Italian according to the CEFRL framework* (or equivalent)
  • Highly-developed commercial and client relationship management skills acquired in a business environment, with a clear commitment to excellent customer service;
  • Ability to work effectively and supportively with colleagues and contacts in the immediate and wider team;
  • Ability to respond flexibly to changing priorities;
  • Good sense of organisation, communication and proactivity;
  • Engage effectively and independently as part of a bilingual team;
  • Good command of MS office package and main communication platform (MS teams)
  • Understanding of retail and/or education sectors

This is a full-time temporary position for a 12 months contract, with possibility of renewal, graded AO according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,312.07. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 35 hrs per week with some flexibility allowed.

The appointment is subject to security clearance and the successful completion of a four months probationary period.

All staff employed by the British Diplomatic Missions in Italy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by British Diplomatic Missions in Italy are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
