The British Consulate-General in Boston is seeking a highly motivated officer to be the Consulate lead on clean growth and climate change policy across New England.  The core focus of this role will be in supporting the Consul General and Consulate team to develop a regional strategy to follow up on the outcomes of the UN’s Conference on Climate (COP26) which takes place in Glasgow in November 2021. There will be a particular focus on renewable energy (including offshore wind, energy storage and green hydrogen) as well as adaptation and resilience to climate change and environmental justice.  The role will help develop and manage broader programmes and projects that promote and offer UK expertise in the clean energy economy and climate advocacy to companies and organizations in the region.

 

The job holder will report directly to the Consul General, and will work alongside our trade & investment, Science & Innovation and Public Affairs teams in Boston and across the US. There will also be close coordination with the Prosperity and Energy & Climate policy teams in the British Embassy in Washington.

 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

·       Consulate lead on climate engagement in the region with a primary focus on Massachusetts and Maine. This could involve speaking at conferences, joining / hosting events, convening appropriate networking opportunities, hosting visitors, and engaging the private sector.   

·       A core part of this role will be in identifying and implementing creative ways to raise the profile of UK climate action in New England, and to support ambitious city and state-level climate action.

·       Consulate lead on clean growth with a particular focus on offshore wind sector and business development opportunities, working in close collaboration with the Energy policy team in DC and the Department of International Trade in New York.

·       Propose, plan, deliver and assess programme funded projects with a focus on opening up new opportunities for trade and investment by expanding global markets, and supporting regulatory dialogue in priority sectors.  

·       Participate in crisis training and be part of the Consulate-wide team response in the event of a crisis.

·       Bachelors’ degree minimum and or;

·       A minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience. 

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills.

·       Strong ability to work across remote teams, and skilled interaction with external contacts of all levels.      

·       Strong research skills and familiarity with key regional information sources including the ability to identify and access a range of online resources.

·       Reliable, capable under pressure, able to complete multiple tasks and high volumes of work on deadline, working collaboratively with colleagues and with considerable autonomy.

·       Track record of successful delivery of projects through co-ordinating work of diverse teams, including at a distance and with external organisations, making creative use of opportunities, resources and technology.

·       Appreciation and understanding of multicultural Britain.

·       Demonstrated interest in the clean growth and climate agenda.      

·       A good understanding of the challenges and sensitivities of working in the world of government and politics.

An ability to travel across the patch, occasionally elsewhere within the US (particularly Washington DC), and the UK is required. Clean US driving license an advantage.

·       The successful candidate should be prepared to work occasional long hours, including early mornings, evenings and sometime weekends, flexing to the Consulate's needs.
