Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade (DIT). Our aim is to promote British trade and investment across the world, which is vital for the prosperity of the UK. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Trade Promotion and Negotiation Organisation for the UK. We promote UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries. Our aspiration is to address some of the challenges facing the UK, by helping British businesses to internationalise and grow overseas.

You will join the DIT’s Africa network, providing crucial leadership and expertise as part of our expansion. You will be networked closely with colleagues from across HMG working on prosperity issues as DIT can only successfully deliver our commercial ambitions by working seamlessly as part of joint and coordinated prosperity teams alongside the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Roles and responsibilities:

  • You will drive the implementation of a pan-Africa sector trade plan focussed on outcomes and with clear priorities, goals, milestones and deliverables. You will support sector focussed events, follow up with key UK Financial and other Professional Services (i.e. “FPS”) firms who have an interest in exporting/selling and/or investing into Africa. You will also drive close collaboration and teamwork with our African country teams, helping them to understand and access expertise on UK capability, and ensure we have a clear understanding of the interests of major UK firms active in Africa, according to the FPS segmentation strategy.
  • You will help maintain our pipeline of key leads reflects key upcoming opportunities in the sector on the African continent. You will help drive teamwork, drawing on your inputs and research, to ensure all members of our pan-Africa Sector Team are working in close alignment. You will work together with UK and African stakeholders to advance UK interests in FPS sector.
  • You will support our strong programme of relationship management with major UK firms in the FPS sector.
  • You will provide analysis of their key interest in potential leads and on the market access barriers they may face.
  • You will use your own experience of business to secure value-adding and enhancing services for UK business among the DIT Africa team. You will help to drive forward our work in this key sector, helping country teams in DIT Africa to find new opportunities, develop new leads and deals, help build solutions to resolve problems, and win export and or investment.
  • Supporting the DIT sector team head on FPS in the UK, you will spend a portion of your time marrying African needs to UK solutions, exploring UK capability, and building commercial partnerships for the UK – including where UK expertise can be used for example by UK FPS services needed to deliver financial solutions such as Euro/Green bonds, FinTech/tech Fund raising, Insurance, Infrastructure funding mobilisation etc. matching the substantial capability and world leading innovation to develop African capability
  • At least five years’ experience working in a for-profit financial services organisation, including, alternative investing, asset management, banking, development finance institutions /multi-laterals, insurance, pension fund and or sovereign wealth fund etc. and/or a large professional services consulting firm
  • Postgraduate degree or undergraduate degree and other relevant professional qualification or experience
  • A highly motivated, resilient, yet flexible attitude that is solution-driven and enjoys working through challenges.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills, self-motivated and results driven
  • Proven track record of cross-team collaboration
  • Strong IT skills in Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of, and a keen interest of the FPS sector and the UK offer to businesses seeking to invest/export to Africa
  • Knowledge of (incl. a demonstrable interest) in African markets and/or African FPS needs in the context of global sustainable development goals
  • Ability to work with people at all levels of seniority in an international environment and within a fast paced, results orientated organisation
  • Previous business development experience
  • Experience of working with private sector institutions (while experience within government will be useful, candidates are working for government should demonstrate clear evidence of working with private sector institutions, demonstrating a clear understanding of their mandates and processes)
  • Experience of working within the Francophone African region
