The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for Trade and Investment Adviser, job grade Executive Officer (EO), under the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

The Trade and Investment Adviser will be responsible for leading on trade ties between the UK and Jordan as a member of DBT. The jobholder will be leading on the strategic sectors of Energy, Infrastructure, and Technology. This involves raising the profile of UK products and services, supporting the implementation of the UK-Jordan Association Agreement, attracting and supporting Jordan-based companies to expand operations into the UK, and identifying and removing barriers to trade. The role requires strong market knowledge and a network of contacts.

The role includes setting strategic direction and priorities, which requires close collaboration with the wider DBT Middle East Regional Trade Team and Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Economy and Prosperity Team at the British Embassy Amman.

The jobholder will also be the point of contact of the UK’s GREAT Campaign communications and assets in coordination with British Embassy Amman and Regional Teams. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribute significantly to relevant elements of Jordan Delivery Plan, which is developed from the MEaP Regional Trade Plan and British Embassy Country Business Plan.
  • Trade Policy: Support the implementation of the UK-Jordan Association Agreement by sharing input and insights at relevant meetings, trade analysis and market research.
  • Market Access: Identify and develop an action plan to spot opportunities and barriers through market intelligence and regular interactions with relevant contacts.
  • Export wins: Build an effective network of relationships with relevant leaders in key entities in Jordan and the UK to secure actual high-value business contracts for UK companies.
  • Proactively develop, manage, and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders in the Jordanian and British business community, relevant government bodies, and investors in order to identify and increase export and investment opportunities.
  • Monitor economic trends and trade statistics, with an overall responsibility for the Energy, Infrastructure, and Technology Sectors. As a sector lead, you will be responsible for obtaining market intelligence, identifying commercial opportunities for UK companies, monitoring market trends and projects, assessing demand for UK products and services, and key areas of growth.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the UK Government; UK Export Finance (UKEF), Trade Policy, Economy and Prosperity, and Regional Sector Leads to identify and collaborate on cross-cutting priorities.
  • Manage visit programmes with key stakeholders to maximise exposure for UK companies and liaise with colleagues on media coverage. Provide relevant briefings, information, and introductions that will help UK companies secure business in the market.
  • Facilitate, manage, and represent DBT Jordan and the British Embassy in relevant commercial events to highlight UK excellence and technologies in lead sectors and target contacts through the GREAT Campaign and trade events to promote DBT services.
  • Liaise with the British Embassy’s Communications Team and Regional Marketing Hub on GREAT Campaign priorities and branding regulations.
  • Deputise and support DBT Director Jordan whenever needed and during their absence.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • You have the right to live and work in Jordan; and
  • You receive the appropriate level of security clearance.
  • Relevant experience in a similar field (business development and trade), ideally for at least five years.
  • Solid understanding of the drivers and challenges of the local commercial market and sectors in Jordan (including major opportunities and trends), and ideally with an established network in covering business, trade associations, government, and other key stakeholders.
  • Relevant experience in comprehensive account management. Ability to develop and maintain a network of contacts to identify trade opportunities and to facilitate business connections and partnerships.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Arabic, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication. Able to simplify complexities and adapt communication so others can understand.
  • Ability to plan strategically, assimilate information from a range of sources, and to see the bigger picture to spot opportunities.
  • Proven experience of working pro-actively, independently and towards performance targets within a team setting, contributing to the overall goals of the section.
  • Team player who is capable of working on their own initiative as well as with others, including in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Strong customer focus and ability to deliver quality service.
  • Collaborative approach to colleague and stakeholder partnerships. Ability to drive delivery of outcomes and overcome obstacles, especially when working with and through others.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 1,702 per month based on a 37 hours per week.

Salary will be paid gross and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.

This role is for a full-time employment on a permanent contract basis. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period (as appropriate). The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have a right to live and work in Jordan.

Normal working hours at the Embassy are from 08:00-15:30 from Sunday to Wednesday and from 08:00-15:00 on Thursday. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies.

The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and will involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends), especially during visits and events.
