The British Embassy in Dublin is part of a world-wide network, representing UK political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Justice and Home Affairs Policy Officer.

A job has opened up at the British Embassy for a Justice and Home Affairs Policy Officer in the Embassy’s Political team. Bilateral co-operation between the UK and Ireland on Justice and Home affairs is a high priority for the UK. It includes work on a wide range of issues such as policing and judicial cooperation, serious and organised crime, online harms and data protection. The officer will become a policy expert on these issues, working with Embassy colleagues to spot opportunities for closer bilateral cooperation. They will provide advice to the Ambassador and embassy, write reports about policy developments, conduct research, organise programmes for visiting officials, answer questions, develop and deliver projects and events, and represent the Embassy with external stakeholders. The work is varied, fast-paced and fascinating. There will also be the opportunity to be involved in wider Embassy work including high profile visits of British Ministers and members of the Royal Family.

We are looking for someone with excellent written and oral communication skills who is able to draft a range of written reports at pace, is confident briefing senior stakeholders and able to set out UK positions and points of view clearly and persuasively to external contacts. They will be used to working in a fast-paced environment, able to work on multiple tasks to different deadlines and demonstrate good judgement and decision-making skills. Strong networking skills are a core skill for this role, they must be able to quickly establish and maintain a wide network of contacts within Ireland e.g. with Irish Government officials, academia and civil society; and also with UK officials in departments such as the Home Office, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, and the Ministry of Justice.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide policy analysis and reporting across a range of Justice and Home Affairs issues.

  • Develop a network of contacts with relevant experts in Ireland and with UK officials.

  • Work with senior Embassy colleagues to develop policy and advice on strategies to engage Irish stakeholders.  

  • Organise ministerial, parliamentary and senior official visits to Ireland; delivering the programme with input from various stakeholders.

  • Devise and deliver projects, events and seminars.

  • Engage confidently across the Embassy and with external stakeholders on Justice and Home Affairs matters.

  • Spot opportunities and develop proposals for bilateral initiatives.

  • Represent the Embassy in meetings with Irish Government Officials and stakeholders.

  • Be open and flexible by supporting wider Embassy activity when required, including support to the First Secretary on Northern Ireland, new policy priorities, crisis work.

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken (minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*).

  • Strong networking and influencing skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong decision-making and judgement.

  • Ability to work in an international and inter-cultural context.

  • A self-starter, with the ability to organise self and work effectively.

  • Ability to think strategically and creatively.

  • Adaptability and resilience under pressure, including when juggling multiple competing priorities.

  • Good IT skills, including experience of Outlook, Word and PowerPoint.

  • University degree.

  • Knowledge of UK and or Irish government and political institutions and processes.

  • Knowledge of Justice and Home Affairs issues.

  • Experience of working in policy making, reporting or analysis.

  • Project management experience.

The successful candidate will be subject to a six-month probationary period and will be employed on a fixed-term contract basis for two years with the possibility of renewal. The appointment is subject to satisfactory reference and security checks.

 All L&D required on FCDO/UK government standards and systems will be provided.
