The British Embassy in Sofia is seeking to recruit a confident, customer-oriented Vice-Consul (maternity cover) to join and lead a small team at the British Embassy Sofia, Bulgaria.
The successful applicant will lead on the day-to-day provision of high-quality consular support to British nationals in Bulgaria and North Macedonia and manage and deliver a targeted prevention programme to advise and inform on our wider consular priorities.

The Vice-Consul will report to the Consul / Consular Regional Operations Manager based in Sofia.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Bulgarian (written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework* or equivalent);
  • A strong team player with previous management experience;
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience (to include working with the public and staff management skills);
  • Excellent communication skills; both written and oral, including the ability to communicate at all levels;
  • Proactive, adaptable and the ability to work across small teams;
  • Initiative, drive & determination with superior problem solving skills, sound judgement, common sense and the ability to remain calm under pressure;
  • Proven ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple tasks;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft’s Word, PowerPoint and Teams;
  • Experience of public speaking duties.
  • Experience of managing outreach programmes.
  • A good knowledge of multi-cultural Britain, its language, and geography.

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time, temporary contract (36 hours per week) to cover for a maternity leave with a monthly salary of 2,636.44 gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Bulgarian employment law.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background and security clearance.

Anyone with right of residence and employment in Bulgaria may apply, including all EU/EEA citizens and the family members of EU/EEA nationals exercising a treaty right in Bulgaria.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Bulgaria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
