View Vacancy - EU/ Prosperity Policy Officer, Rome B3 (ITA307)
The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an EU/ Prosperity Policy Officer.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading on aspects of the UK-Italy prosperity relationship for British Embassy Rome. Identify opportunities and develop policy in transport, sport, food and agriculture, working with stakeholders in business, government and civil society. Organise visits to Rome from UK ministers and officials. Support senior diplomatic staff on EU policy engagement with MAECI and the UK Government in London, as the UK develops a new relationship with the EU.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Lead on UK-Italy prosperity policy – 25%
You will be responsible for developing UK-Italy prosperity policy in the areas of transport, sport, food and agriculture. This is an exciting opportunity to spot gaps in existing policy and expand the UK Government’s range of contacts in Italy. You will work closely with colleagues in Rome, Milan and London to broaden the UK’s bilateral relationship, by developing new strands of activity in your policy portfolio. You will also have the opportunity to work Italian government ministries, exploring areas for collaboration, organising events and attending external meetings.
- Drive engagement on EU issues – 25%
This is a historic moment in the UK’s relationship with the EU. The UK Government is committed to developing a strong partnership with the EU, as we work with the Commission to develop a new model for the relationship. This role offers a unique opportunity to work with stakeholders in business and civil society to understand their perspectives and communicate UK policy as it evolves. You will work closely with the Economic Officer and the Social Policy Officer to generate reporting, policy papers and events. You will also have the opportunity to work with colleagues in the FCO in London and the UK Representation to the EU in Brussels. There will be opportunities to travel to London.
- Organise visits and events – 25%
British Embassy Rome receives a steady stream of visitors (ministers and senior officials) from London and other EU posts. You will be lead on the logistics and coordination of these visits, developing programmes, arranging meetings and hosting guests. You will also organise Embassy events on EU and propensity issues and develop your own network of contacts to enable you to deliver your policy objectives.
- Develop effective communications – 20%
You will prepare regular reporting for colleagues in London and Brussels. The ability to draft with precision, flair and concision will be essential to this job. You will be given support and training from your line manager to help you refine these skills. You will also have the opportunity to develop your public speaking skills through presenting at internal and external meetings and conferences.
- Corporate and/or crisis engagement within the Italy network – 5%
You will play a role supporting the corporate or crisis agenda within the network via involvement or engagement in a corporate work stream/committee or as an active member of the crisis team.
- Experience of working in a policy environment (e.g. government, legal or business).
- Excellent command of English and Italian, Common European Framework level C1 or above (or equivalent).
- Ability to write succinctly and persuasively in English and Italian.
- Strong organisational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work effectively with colleagues and a wide range of stakeholders.
- Ability to deliver complex policy work at speed.
- Experience working on EU legal and/or policy issues.
- Experience running large events.
- Academic background in international relations, politics, economics or law.
- Experience working in an English-speaking environment.
This is a part-time temporary position with a contract of 10 months, graded B3 according to the FCO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,400. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.
Working hours are 30 hrs per week Monday to Friday 09.00-15.00.
The appointment is subject to security clearance and the successful completion of a three month probationary period.
All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme.Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
