The British Embassy Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political & economic and consular interests overseas. A full time position as an Immigration Liaison Assistant (ILA) has become available in the Home Office Immigration Enforcement International team (IEI) based at the British Embassy Berlin. This overseas network is part of the Immigration Enforcement directorate of the Home Office and currently has country responsibility for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

A key focus of the IEI team is to ensure that passengers travelling to the UK by air are correctly documented to do so, and to prevent the travel of passengers who attempt to circumvent the UK immigration laws by travelling with forged documents and those who have no entitlement to do so. The team works in partnership with the respective host country border policing authorities and other stakeholders to maintain and strengthen the integrity of the United Kingdom border and combat Organised Immigration Crime.

Your contribution as an ILA will be focused on supporting the Immigration Liaison Officers & Manager in Berlin, and colleagues across the FCO Germany network.

 Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative and organisational support to the Immigration Liaison Manager (ILM) and Immigration Liaison Officer (ILO) as necessary;
  • Maintain risk databases, including substantial data entry and related background research;
  • Diary management, and monitoring incoming requests;Prepare statistics and reports;
  • Liaise with and develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders including Embassy colleagues, airlines and local Law Enforcement across the Germany/Austria/Switzerland region;
  • Manage the team email inbox including responding to, actioning and referring on emails as appropriate;
  • Organise regional travel, training sessions and internal/external meetings in consultation with the ILO/M;
  • To contribute to the wider objectives of the British Government’s Germany network and to support the Embassy’s positive working environment by becoming part of the British Government’s presence in Germany, which aims to support and foster them and their work.

 

  • Fluent English and German (both written and spoken, minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*) and excellent communication skills;
  • IT literacy, a good knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Power Point is essential;
  • The ability to work effectively within a small team;
  • Flexibility. Occasionally the position may require the job holder to work extended hours or work flexibly, sometimes at short notice.

 

 

  • Experience of working in an international/multilateral environment;
  • Previous administrative experience;
  • Basic knowledge of UK and Germany government/civil service structures;
  • Previous experience or knowledge of the travel industry, aviation and/or security sectors.

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours net  per week, for an initial contract period of two years, which may be extended by mutual agreement.

The jobholder will become part of the British Government’s presence in Germany, which aims to support and foster them and their work.

The British Embassy in Berlin has a strong ethos of Learning and Development, including our Learning and Development Week. In addition, there will be many opportunities to attend external seminars and events on relevant issues. This is in addition to the induction programme offered to all Embassy staff.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to be actively involved in the corporate life of the Embassy, contributing to the wider objectives of the British Government’s Germany network and supporting the Embassy’s positive working environment.

 

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance,with a probation period of 6 months and is expected to commence employment as soon as possible .
