Climate Diplomacy

The British Embassy in Kazakhstan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, trade, and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Climate Change Officer.

The Climate Change Officer will provide resilience and expertise on climate change and green transition policy work in Kazakhstan, driving forward the COP26 Presidency agenda and country business plan commitments on climate and environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leading on Kazakhstan’s green transition, understanding the barriers to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and promoting a collaborative, coordinated approach across the international diplomatic and development community, including working with FCDO Development colleagues in Central Asia to develop possible joint projects.   
  • Leading on Kazakhstan’s COP26 commitments and devising influence strategies with incoming COP Presidencies to help ensure Kazakhstan meets its UNFCCC commitments.
  • Maximising the use of social media as an influencing and campaigning tool, organising events and developing networking groups to promote ambitious action.
  • Engaging with policy makers at national and regional level on immediate actions to cut emissions, such as gasification and energy efficiency, and working with trade colleagues on emerging market opportunities critical to the green transition (particularly rare earths and mineral mining)
  • Building the fledgling biodiversity portfolio in BE Nur-Sultan, engaging with stakeholders on the Steppe ecosystem and underdeveloped action on adaptation. 

  • Fluency in English and Russian, both written and spoken (minimum of C1 CEFR framework level language*) 
  • At least 2 years of experience of climate change policy and the green transition agenda in Kazakhstan either from a government or non-government perspective and or a relevant degree
  • Excellent drafting and writing skills
  • High proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Fluency in Kazakh, written and spoken (minimum of C1 CEFR framework level language*)

This is a full-time position of 5 working days (36 hours net) per week, 12 month-contract.

Salary will be USD 1,719 per calendar month (gross). Please note that it is the employee’s responsibility to pay individual income tax.

Employees are entitled to annual leave entitlement pro-rata based on 25 days total per calendar year. In addition, the Embassy observes up to 14 days public holidays marking different Kazakh and UK holidays. The Embassy provides medical insurance for the job holder and two dependants.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a professional background check and security clearance, and is expected to commence employment as soon as possible. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for the Kazakhstan in order to apply. All applicants should have the right to live and work in Kazakhstan.
