Main purpose of job:

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the Department of International Trade Investment Team (DIT) at the British Embassy, Seoul covering maternity leave from May 2018 until February 2019.  The Department of International Trade (DIT) aims to secure UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade.  

The Inward Investment Team is a small and dynamic unit within the Embassy’s Department for International Trade (DIT) Section.  It has an important role in promoting the UK Government’s economic agenda by attracting and retaining high-value Korean corporate investment into the UK.  This is achieved by developing, managing and leveraging a wide range of business and government contacts in both the UK and Korea.

The successful candidate will be a key member of the team, working directly for the Head of Investment with line management responsibility of an experienced Investment Officer.  They will lead on investment projects from specific sectors (on current plans, Technology, Creativity and Retail, although this may be subject to change).

As a high-profile and senior member of the Embassy, the job holder will be comfortable working without supervision and confident in influencing senior Korean interlocutors and in advising, assisting and occasionally interpreting for visiting UK Government Ministers, senior officials and companies meeting their Korean counterparts. 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with a wide range of Korean companies working in your assigned sectors, understanding their business strategies and identifying those with the potential to do business in the European market;
  • Convincing those companies of the benefits of setting up an operation in the UK, and with support from the DIT network, assisting them in all aspects of the process;
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Korean companies from your assigned sectors that have a presence in the UK and, liaison with UK colleagues, assisting them in overcoming any barriers to their successful UK operation and encouraging them to expand;
  • Supporting the Head of Investment in implementing and continuously improving the team’s strategy to increase the quality and quantity of Korean investors into the UK;
  • Monitoring and analysing developments that might impact the likelihood of Korean companies from your assigned sectors investing overseas, particularly into the EU;
  • Managing programmes for DIT specialists visiting Korea, briefing them on local developments and accompanying them on their visits;
  • Continuous, high-quality appraisal of your team, ensuring they are on track to meet their targets and provided with sufficient support, coaching and training to enable them to deliver.
  • Play a role in the wider corporate activity of the Embassy, including crisis preparedness.

    A successful track record of:

    • Business Development, customer service, sales and marketing skills
    • Strong staff management and leadership skills
    • Developing, and implementing commercially focused sector strategies, and/or business plans
    • Strong IT literacy
    • Language: English and Korean; Fluent in spoken and written
    • Experience of delivering foreign direct investment projects
    • Experience of working or doing business in the UK
    • Experience of working in the private sector ideally with a background in a relevant sector
