The British Embassy in Reykjavik is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Social Media and Marketing Officer.

Working as part of a small team, the successful candidate will help the Embassy advance wider UK interests and priorities by promoting the UK. This includes building upon and fostering the many existing strong links between the UK and Iceland.

This role is crucial in maintaining the Icelandic perception of the Embassy as a reliable, informative and accurate source of information. This is to be achieved primarily through effective use of social media. though networking, organising  set events and campaigns will also be an important part of the role. 

Main roles and responsibilities:

  • Manage the Embassy’s social media accounts and website including content creation both independently and in collaboration with the communication team at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Ensure that the Embassy’s messaging and interactions on the various platforms are accurate, timely and targeted. Keep up to date on social media trends and new initiatives and lead on proposing and implementing new approaches for the Embassy. Continuously monitor and improve the effectiveness of the Embassy´s messaging.     
  • Monitor Icelandic traditional and social media to identify cultural, social, business or academic opportunities for the Embassy to engage with to further our priorities. Work with the rest of the Embassy team to develop any opportunities identified.
  • Maintain a wide network of press, radio and TV media contacts to facilitate the Embassy in arranging interviews, op-eds, articles and responses to engage the wider Icelandic population on the bilateral relationship and the Embassy´s aims.  
  • Lead on organising Embassy events, projects and major campaigns (e.g. talks, receptions or exhibitions) . This includes planning, budgeting, monitoring and ensuring impactful delivery in line with the overall objectives..   
  • Lead on the various university scholarship schemes the Embassy is involved with to ensure the impartial selection of strong scholars who have the potential to be future leaders. This will include building and maintaining good relations with the sponsors, universities and scholarship alumni network.  
  • Work with the British Council, Visit Britain and Universities UK among others to help promote their campaigns and messaging in Iceland.
  • In addition to the above, the successful candidate will be expected to provide support to colleagues to help achieve wider Embassy objectives e.g. helping out during visits by UK officials and Ministers, provide leave cover for the Political Officer, contribute to crisis team preparations and help during any major crisis involving UK nationals.
  • Fluency at a C1 level (according to the CEFR) both written and oral in English
  • Fluency at a C2 level (according to the CEFR) both written and oral in Icelandic
  • Proven social media skills
  • Experience in building and maintaining a network of relevant contacts
  • Experience in delivering marketing campaigns
  • Experience in successfully planning and organising events
  • A good understanding of Iceland’s media, cultural and academic scene
