Main purpose of job:

The Head of Marketing is responsible for developing and implementing the British High Commission’s Soft power Strategy in consultation with the Head of Communications; and will lead on marketing efforts which contribute towards building a positive profile of the UK and Her Majesty’s Government.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Develop and implement the British High Commission’s Soft Power and Marketing Strategy, in consultation with the Head of Communications which will support the organisation’s Business Plan objectives.
  • Produce and implement the Soft Power Marketing Work Programme to achieve the organisation’s soft power objectives, Return on Investment and Return on Influence targets.  Marketing activity to include: event management; production of marketing materials; content development including video and content for social media or online platforms.
  • With the support of the Marketing & GREAT Campaign Officer, serve as the Secretary of the BHC-KL Soft Power Committee, of which the British High Commissioner is Chair.
  • Produce marketing bids to secure the necessary budget/s from GREAT Challenge Fund and other funds to deliver the Post’s annual Soft Power Marketing Work Programme.
  • Build the business relationships and produce the business/marketing proposals to secure the necessary value-in-kind and cash sponsorship to deliver GREAT marketing campaigns and Post’s soft power marketing campaigns. 
  • Oversee the management of any Marketing campaign budgets working closely with the Marketing & GREAT Campaign Officer and Finance colleagues.
  • Oversee the production of any marketing collaterals in accordance with GREAT and other brand guidance.
  • Build effective working relationships with colleagues to instil a marketing culture in the organisation, and to work closely with colleagues from the GREAT HQ as well as Marketing Hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore. 
  • Build effective working relationships with partners such as the British Council and the British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce, British business in Malaysia and Malaysian foreign direct investors in the UK. 
  • Ensure timely and effective marketing campaign evaluation and reporting including monthly GREAT campaign highlights, marketing report feedback to the Hong Kong Marketing Hub and GREAT Team HQ.

Essential on arrival:      

  • Over 6 years of marketing experience including in a senior marketing position. 
  • Strategic marketing and communication skills
  • Excellent written, spoken, presentation and representational skills
  • Strong team player but able to work independently
  • Ability to multitask and handle project based work
  • Excellent networking, relationship management and influencing skills
  • Flexible approach to work and willingness to participate in representational events after office hours and occasional travel
  • Strong budget management
  • Proficiency in MS Office and good IT skills
  • Have the legal right to live and work in Malaysia
  • Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia is an advantage.

Working patterns:

Flexible working will be possible, in agreement with the line manager, and a high degree of working from home. 

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.

This position is being advertised as a 24 months fixed-term position in Kuala Lumpur, and will be extended subject to performance and availability of funding.
