The British Embassy in Hungary is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Deputy Head of Policy Team. 

The Deputy Head of the Policy Team will be responsible, with the Head of Team, for delivering the overall policy objectives of the British Embassy in Budapest.  In particular, the Deputy Head of Team will have specific responsibilities to supervise delivery of the new UK-Hungary bilateral strategy, which aims to strengthen & deepen ties between the two countries. The job-holder will also line manage three of the five policy officers, ensuring quality and timely work in their areas of responsibility (economic policy; domestic policy; knowledge & society policy). The job-holder will also oversee the delivery of an increased level of project and programme work over the next one to two years, acting in an oversight role and reporting to senior management. 

Line manage, supervise and support the learning and development of 3 staff (Domestic Policy Officer; Economic Policy Officer; Knowledge & Society Policy Officer).

Work with the 3 staff who you manage and colleagues across the Embassy, including the Deputy Head of Mission and Ambassador, to deliver the Embassy’s objectives on domestic, economic and knowledge & society policy.  Deputise the Head of Team as necessary, maintaining working knowledge of policy areas for which jobholder is not directly responsible (EU exit; foreign policy).

Approve and add value to work by 3 staff who you manage, including reports, correspondence and speeches, before submission to senior Embassy staff or London.

Alongside lead policy officer, take ownership of and drive delivery of Bilateral Strategy, delivering through policy leads inside and outside the immediate Team.

Oversee the Team’s wide-ranging project and programme work, ensuring delivery of timely outputs and outcomes in-line with Embassy objectives and to budget.

Develop a range of contacts in Government and outside of Government (for example academics, think-tanks, experts, non-governmental organisations).

The jobholder will be managing 3 experienced staff within the Team, and should have at least 4 years’ experience in line management, with track-record of getting the best out of people;

At least 3 years’ experience of working in policy, whether international or domestic;

At least 2 years’ experience of delivering or overseeing project and programme work, with awareness of need for strict financial controls and a firm focus on outputs and outcomes;

Knowledge of the Hungarian political and economic landscape;

Excellent command of English and Hungarian (both oral and written);

Excellent communication and organisational skills;

Strong in delivering results often to tight deadlines and with good self-organisation and attention to detail;

Excellent leadership skills, with the knowledge and experience to drive forward projects by delivering through others;

Creative thinking, good problem solving and analytical skills;

Reliable, able to work in a team with changing priorities with a flexible approach;

University or College degree (preferably in International Relations, Politics, Economics or similar).

Knowledge of and interest in UK and international political scene.

This is a one year fixed-term contract, with the option for a mutually agreed further year.  It is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week).

Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.
