Science and Innovation

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team responsible for the rapidly growing UK-China science and innovation relationship. You will take on a leading role working with UK stakeholders in government, industry and academia to coordinate, enhance and deliver UK interests regarding innovation cooperation with China. You will develop and maintain relations with key Chinese policymakers, academics and companies, analysing the impacts of Chinese policy reforms – and the opportunities and risks they pose for the UK, and influencing the policy approach which China takes regarding innovation. You will implement the communications strategy for the team to generate new business opportunities and raise our profile with customers and stakeholders. This is a maternity cover position for 8 months.

You will be a self starter, capable of identifying and delivering projects to time and budget. You will have excellent written English, be capable of influencing outcomes through your targeted reports. You will be energetic, able to work autonomously, handle multiple tasks and prioritise, a team worker, showing flexibility and an ability to build good working relationships with a variety of stakeholders and colleagues.

1.       Innovation policy:

  • Update and lead implementation of SIN China’s Innovation Strategy
  • Engage experts in China and the UK to build evidence base on opportunities and risks of innovation cooperation
  • Deliver projects/policy work to identify, highlight and mitigate risks to UK companies and universities
  • Monitor and report on policy changes in China’s innovation landscape

2.       Innovation collaboration:

  • Deliver and evaluate projects to generate UK-China innovation partnerships and commercial opportunities for UK companies and universities
  • Engage and support UK entities in identifying and capitalising on innovation opportunities in China
  • Provide oversight and support to SIN sector leads on developing innovation opportunities in sector projects

3.       Communications:

  • Implement SIN China communications strategy to promote UK S&I excellence to Chinese stakeholders, ensure UK stakeholders aware of China opportunities and risks, and raise profile of SIN China across UK government and other stakeholders, including through:
  • Managing team production of blogs, impact studies and quarterly newsletter
  • Delivering public- and media-facing events, and managing comms and media activity for high level visits related to S&I

4.       Network management/SIN metrics:

  • Lead coordination of SIN metrics and impact tracking for reporting on SIN China’s performance at mid-year and end-of-year
  • Project management skills
  • Strong organisational, communication, analytical, problem solving and networking skills
  • Strong IT and organisational skills, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and database management

We offer a competitive package, which includes basic salary, good leave entitlement, and insurance plan, etc. The gross starting salary (before all deductions) for this part time position is CNY 27,396 / month for Chinese Nationals and an abated monthly salary of CNY 35,742 / month for British Nationals and spouses/ partners (all nationalities) of diplomats who are ‘W’ (diplomatic) visa holders and meet passport criteria.
