Department for International Trade roles (DIT)
Department for International Trade (DIT)

Main purpose of job:

This post (Hyderabad) is a key member of our Healthcare and Life Sciences Trade Sector Teams, who support the agenda of the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) within the British High Commission (BHC). DIT’s aim is to promote British trade and investment across the world which is vital for the prosperity of the UK.

These sector teams are focused on supporting UK exporters to dramatically grow the volume of trade in healthcare and life sciences with India through strategic export campaigns (including tackling market access barriers – see below), pipeline development and by supporting UK companies to translate these opportunities into export deals and partnerships/collaborations. You will also support delivery of overseas direct investment (ODI) targets by UK companies into India. As part of our strategic export campaigns in these sectors, you will work on market access issues which hinder trade e.g. non-tariff barriers with our Trade Policy Team where life sciences has been identified as a priority sector for early work with the Government of India. This is an important part of our evolving work on trade policy and includes lobbying or advocating the concerned government departments to overcome these barriers.

Based in the South of India, your primary focus will be on the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. You will liaise with senior decision makers of pharmaceutical comapnies, hospitals, bio-tech and medical technology companies to identify opportunities for UK exporters, and develop a key account management strategy to support this aimed at building a rolling pipeline of deals/opportunities in these sectors. The job holder will also need to plan and deliver marketing and related communications activities to promote the UK healthcare and life sciences sectors in your States. Based in Hyderabad, you will play role in building and maintaining relationships with senior state government officials to support our commercial activities. You will also need to be flexible and support opportunities that might arise outside of your immediate states. As part of this you will be required to undertake limited travel in India, as well as to the UK on occasion – including for training.

Experience and knowledge of the healthcare and life sciences sectors are critical. For the purposes of our trade promotion work, we define healthcare as including disease management, healthcare services provision (including both public and private), diagnostics and broader healthcare infrastructure. Life sciences includes pharma, bio-tech and medical technology.

You will bring with you an in-depth knowledge of these sectors and use this to build a strategy for the two states targeting current and longer term opportunities for UK business, focusing particularly on large or high-value deals where UK government support or intervention can make a real difference. You will work closely with the global sector teams based in DIT HQ London and our teams across the UK regions to bring UK companies to India and support them to win business. You will be responsible along with other team members for helping the teams meet their yearly ambitions for export deals supported which is a key part of how we measure success, as well as other more longer term strategic projects.

Your role will be high profile. You will be the voice of the UK government and industry in these sectors, and you will be expected to gain access to the most senior levels within Indian industry and government if necessary using the Deputy High Commissioners and other senior staff. You will be a self-starter who is highly organised, can plan and manage themselves, and build productive relationships with key stakeholders in business and the government.

In doing so, contribute to delivering DIT’s agreed ambitions for export and investment wins, and other metrics for the sectors e.g. customer satisfaction/quality.
