Applications are invited for the position of Trade Officer (Grade B3) at the British Consulate-General in Vancouver with the Department for International Trade (DIT). The position will be on a two year contract basis with a start date of June 2017 subject to successful local and overseas security clearances. 

The successful applicant will work as part of the DIT network across Canada, promoting UK exports by assisting British companies to develop their business in Canada and by helping Canadian companies source British goods, services and business partners.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete tailored market research for UK companies in a variety of sectors across Canada: Education, Consumer and retail, Healthcare/Life Sciences, Marine, Chemicals, Global Sports, Agritech, Ports & Airport
  • Respond to a large volume of general enquiries from the UK in varied sectors regarding export and provide market advice.
  • Assist UK companies to develop their business in a variety of sectors, developing a network of contacts in large and small companies to identify business opportunities for sales of UK products and services.
  • Assist Canadian companies in sourcing British goods and services through business opportunities.
  • Attend key business events to promote UK capability in the key sectors listed above.
  • Plan and organise programmes for trade missions and official visits or events.
  • Successfully use social and digital media (Twitter, blogs) to publicise UK-related trade activities in Canada.

 

  • 3-5 years experience of the commercial world with some experience from specific sectors if possible.
  • Graduate degree preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to flex these to engage with a wide range of internal DIT colleagues across the network, and external contacts at different levels in business organisations. 
  • A pro-active self-starter with the desire to find new business/opportunities/contacts.
  • Competence in IT (MS Office applications). 
  • Have excellent written communication skills intended for a business audience.
  • Good familiarity with the business scene in Vancouver and key business organisations and associations.
  • Proven skills in time management and prioritization, and the ability to effectively manage, and execute multiple and competing tasks under tight deadlines being leading to excellent customer service.

  • Familiarity with or knowledge of the UK would be an advantage.

The successful candidate may be required to travel within Canada and the UK and should be flexible in their approach to occasional work out of office hours.

The position requires pre-existing legal status to live and work in Canada and will be subject to satisfactory reference checks and successful receipt of local and overseas security clearances.
