Science and Innovation

Main purpose of job:

The role of the Science and Innovation Team at the British Embassy Seoul, part of the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), is to facilitate the development and strengthening of science and technology collaboration between the UK and Republic of Korea across governmental, academic and industry levels. While cooperation in all areas is encouraged and pursued, in recent years joint R&D activity has been typically conducted in healthcare, digital technologies (ICT), clean energy, transportation, smart cities technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

The primary role of this position is the working level delivery of existing, and development of new, bilateral strategic science and innovation relationships between the UK and the Republic of Korea in the fields of smart cities and digital technologies. This involves the management and enhancement of key partnerships with the governments, agencies, research institutions, universities, and companies in both countries.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Project Management & Delivery – Smart Cities and Digital Technologies

  • Managing and supporting the delivery of bilateral R&D programmes and projects between the UK and Republic of Korea, maximising project impact and ensuring value for money.
  • Managing sector relevant strategic relationships with government ministries and agencies, research performing organisations and companies.
  • Researching, preparing and disseminating sector relevant reports.
  • Identifying new opportunities for strategic programme creation.
  • Communicating the impact of delivered activities through official social media channels.

Health

  • Leading weekly and ad hoc SIN focussed and cross-Embassy reporting responsibilities by gathering data through desk research and communications with internal and external partners.
  • Supporting Line Manager in the delivery of UK- Republic of Korea collaborative health research and innovation activity, in particular at the intersection of healthcare and digital technologies.
  • Supporting the strengthening of wider healthcare collaboration between the UK and Republic of Korea.

Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

  • Developing and delivering new bilateral channels and programmes for Diversity in STEM engagement.

Budget Management and Administrative Support

  • Leading SIN project budget management and support wider team budget management; be SIN knowledge champion for budget management software
  • Providing administrative support to SIN delivered event and visit activities, e.g. preparing event materials and arranging in-country logistics.

Corporate

  • Taking an active role in one of the many cross-Embassy support committees and activities.

  • Self-motivation, creativity, and the ability to deliver to deadlines, both individually and as part of a team;
  • Evidenced interest in science and innovation and/or international cooperation;
  • Project and budget management experience.
  • Customer relationship and event management experience.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Standard computer literacy skills.
  • A scientific or engineering education or vocational background, particularly in digital technology.
  • Experience working for or with sector relevant Korean ministries, funding agencies, and research performing organisations.
  • Experience in inter-governmental relations.

The position being advertised is to provide temporary cover for a fixed-term of one (1) year. 

The British Embassy in Seoul takes learning and development seriously. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop many core and transferable skills through both formal and informal learning and development opportunities. Members of staff are encouraged to make use of the learning and development opportunities that the office has to offer.

Learning and development opportunities:

  • Project/budget management.
  • Thematic sector knowledge development.
  • Formal learning to be agreed between successful applicant and Line Manager.
  • Successful candidate will be expected to complete mandatory online learning courses and encouraged to pursue other relevant training opportunities.

Standard working hours are from 0900-1715 Monday to Thursday and 0900-1700 Friday.

No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
