The British High Commission in Malta is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for a Press & Communications Officer.

The main purpose of job is to provide advice and analysis of the media environment in Malta and to build a network of local media contacts and act as the spokesperson for the High Commission liaising regularly with local and international journalists. The job holder will be expected to use their own initiative to seek out pro-active media opportunities to promote the work of the High Commission through effective communication tools (e.g. traditional and social media) and add commentary and knowledge to political reporting.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • To act as the spokesperson for the High Commission and to be the main point of contact for all media related enquiries at the High Commission.
  • To oversee media relationship, building a network of media contacts to influence and respond effectively and identify suitable media opportunities and risks. To make key decisions on content while working closely with BHC staff and UK cross Whitehall stakeholders providing timely advice on media handling and public diplomacy activity.

  • To monitor, analyse and interpret local media to highlight any potential political implications, identify emerging trends and provide positive media opportunities. Advise on content and delivery including relevant drafting of articles, speeches, press releases and social media activity working closely with the high Commissioner. Deliver a BHC communications plan that enhances bilateral relations, identifies communications activity and lead on relevant media campaigns and promotion (e.g. consular, Brexit and economic activity).

  • To lead on communications plans and advice for VIP visits, including advice to departmental press officers on suitable media opportunities and local procedures.

  • Maintain a professional knowledge and awareness of communications activity within Europe and wider network.

  • Fluent in English, both written and verbal communication.

  • Fluent Maltese, both written and verbal communication.

  • Local context knowledge.

  • Good understanding and knowledge of Social Media Environment.

  • Good drafting skills.

  • Experience working with social media, journalism or public event management.

  • Experience in drafting articles, speeches and social media posts.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract until 31/3/2021. Working hours Monday to Friday.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.
