The British Embassy in Riga is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a motivated Political and Prosperity Attaché to join the Political team.

As Political and Prosperity Attaché advise on and help to deliver HMG’s and Latvia Bilateral Strategy policy priorities, particularly in respect of prosperity, climate, and energy issues.

Roles and Responsibilities :  

  • Political/Climate/Energy/SIN

Provide local and regional (Baltics/Nordic-Baltic) analysis and reporting on economic, energy, climate change, competitiveness, digital single market, agriculture and fisheries portfolios;

Research and report on other issues on behalf of Political Team as dictated by staffing gaps or business needs;

Build and maintain contacts with key government officials, civil society, business and academic representatives;

Participate in official meetings and engage with government officials, NGOs and business representatives on particular topics as designated by HMA, DHM and the Head of Political Team;

Support delivery of the objectives in Latvia of the Vilnius-based Baltics Science and Innovation (SIN) Attaché.

  • Prosperity/Project management

Act as project manager for the Europe Prosperity Fund initiatives by liaising with relevant sections within the Embassy, implementing partners and contractors;

Present concepts for potential activities in Latvia and regionally (Baltic/NBN) through the Europe Prosperity Fund, Great Challenge Fund and other funding opportunities.

Liaise with prosperity attaches in the Europe Network towards developing joint projects.

Prepare draft reports for approval by the Post Prosperity Committee.

  • Other

Press and media monitoring and reporting: Offer analysis and advice to colleagues and reporting on relevant political and business stories/developments;

Assist with organisation of visits and events;

Contribute to Embassy daily press briefings. Provide cover for Communications Officer on as required basis;

Support HMA and DHM with meetings, interpretation and translation where necessary.

  • Good comprehension of Latvia’s political and socio-economic issues and priorities;

  • Project coordination and management experience;

  • Interest and understanding of the United Kingdom, European Union and international political affairs;

  • Experience of working in government or public affairs environment;

  • Experience of working in international environment will be considered as an asset;

  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks, adopt to changing circumstances and work under pressure;

  • Strong teamwork credentials;

  • Confidence to build and engage with a wide network of contacts;

  • Fluent verbal and written communication in English and Latvian ( both written and oral).



Experience of working in an international environment. Awareness of Latvia’s climate, energy and science and education priorities;

Knowledge of Russian will be considered as an asset.

This is a full-time position under a fixed term contract of 12 months for maternity cover, with possibility of extension.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation for the Latvia in order to apply.
