View Vacancy - HON - Gardener/Back Up Driver/Maintenance Assistant, S2 (L)
Main purpose of job:
Predominantly undertaking gardening work at both British High Commission and domestic properties in Honiara. The gardens are extensive and require consistent attention. To act as the Back Up Driver when the driver is not available including driving the High Commissioner to official calls/appointments in a safe and economical manner in accordance with the Highway Code and local laws. To drive other High Commission vehicles as/when necessary. Also to undertake some official maintenance work on the BHC estate.
Roles and responsibilities / what the jobholder be expected to achieve:
Gardening/Maintenance Work
- You are expected to ensure the High Commission estate, essentially the gardens at the Residence and DHC House, is maintained to a high level. This will involve ensuring the gardens are well maintained, safe and tidy. Grass (where present) should be kept short and the trees/plants should be kept healthy and in keeping with the wishes of the occupants.
- You will be expected to undertake some maintenance work on the BHC estate. This may be with regards to the gardens or at the BHC office itself. You will be expected to observe, accompany, assist and report on outside contractors where necessary. You should inform the Driver/Maintenance Supervisor and/or Corporate Service Manager (or the DHC) whenever you notice areas where maintenance is required, particularly if it is connected with Health and Safety issues.
- Together with the Driver/Maintenance Supervisor, ensure the upkeep and inventory of all maintenance tools which are to be stored securely in the High Commission when not in use. Tools need to be replaced or repaired should be reported to the Driver/Maintenance Supervisor.
Driving
- When undertaking driving work, you are expected to conduct a basic check of any High Commission vehicle to be used. Prepare the vehicle and ensure that it is clean and serviceable. Report any defect to the Driver/Maintenance Supervisor and/or Corporate Services Manager. Ensure that all passengers abide by basic health and safety procedures.
- From time to time, you may be tasked to support the regular upkeep of the High Commission’s fleet, which could include basic checks and maintenance.
- When undertaking messenger tasks, you are responsible for timely delivery and collection of all messages and posts.
- Gardening/landscaping experience; has knowledge of plants/shrubs (flora) of Solomon Islands;
- Holder of a Driving License;
- Knowledge/experience of some of A/Cs, generators, plumbing, electrics;
- Knowledge of maintenance companies/organisations in Honiara;
- Extensive knowledge of locations of ministries/organisations/diplomatic missions/main churches and other areas in Honiara/Guadalcanal.
- Previous experience of working for international organisation/Diplomatic mission
