Main purpose of job: 

The British Deputy High Commission Chennai is looking for an enthusiastic, self-starter to help build and increase our engagement in Renewable Energy, Climate Change and Science and Technology in Tamil Nadu.

The main purpose of the job is to facilitate partnerships between UK and Tamil Nadu by identifying business opportunities, engaging with Govt bodies, organising events, maintaining an extensive range of contacts with UK and Indian Institutions in the above areas, and build a pipeline of commercial opportunities for UK businesses.  

The job holder will work closely with the Prosperity Adviser based in Chennai, the jobholder will be expected to travel extensively and engage with contacts in the region.

Roles and responsibilities: 

Energy and Climate Change (60%)

  • Promote the UK’s strengths in Renewable Energy, green growth and Climate Change to Governments of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and private sector and position the UK as a strong partner.  
  • Identify opportunities and facilitate partnerships between and Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in Smart Power (Electricity Distribution, Industrial Energy Efficiency, EV Charging Infrastructure), Renewable Energy (Solar, Offshore Wind, Storage, Energy Systems, BioFuels and Green hydrogen) and Climate Change (alternatives to plastics, waste to energy, wetlands, decarbonisation), by feeding into central Energy and Climate team and through the delivery of UK’s Technical Assistance programme.
  • Provide evidence, policy analysis and market intelligence on emerging trends, opportunities and challenges related to energy and climate change in Tamil Nadu to the British High Commission network
  • Support the development of commercial pipeline: identify opportunities for the UK Energy/low carbon sector in the region and support UK firms looking to do business in the region, by working closely with trade and investment colleagues and through the delivery of technical assistance programme
  • Promote and identify leads in low carbon growth and Green Finance with the state government and private sector
  • Engage with the state government and regional business to deliver the commitments from COP 26, by working closely with the central energy and climate team

Project and Programme Management (20%)

  • Support/facilitate the delivery of Energy, Climate Change and other UK’s technical assistance programmes with Tamil Nadu (e.g. make introductions, identify issues and policy/commercial opportunities) and monitor the implementing partners to drive delivery and ensure accountability for better results, by working closely with central Energy and Climate team
  • Support inward and outward ministerial and senior officials visits and delegations.

Science and Technology (20%)

  • Identify opportunities in Emerging Technologies and facilitate partnerships between UK and Tamil Nadu, by working closely with British High Commission network
  • Facilitate science and technology partnerships with national centres headquartered in Chennai on coastal research and management, biodiversity, technology etc, by promoting UK-India Research and Innovation, Newton Bhabha, Global Challenges Research fund and other Bilateral funding programmes
  • Contribute to Science and Innovation network and UK-India Research and Innovation policy reporting

Language requirements: 

Language: English (Mandatory), Tamil (Desirable) 

Level of language required:

  • An ability to speak and write in English to a high level is mandatory.
  • An ability to speak in Tamil is desirable.

Essential on arrival:

  • Graduate in any discipline with at-least 3 yrs of work experience
  • Proven Project, visit/event management experience
  • A self starter who can work with minimal supervision
  • Very strong and proven analytical, excellent communication skills and IT proficiency
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (verbal, written)

Desirable:

  • Experience of working in an international organisation.
  • Experience of working with Businesses and Government agencies
  • A good understanding/background about Energy and Change Climate sectors in Tamil Nadu
  • Experience in facilitating policy and/or trade partnerships

SALARY PACKAGE:

BHC candidates, the Local BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.

For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be INR 67,767 per month plus 12% provident fund and 6% Special Allowance/Superannuation Fund. 

Additionally the BHC offers a great benefits package that includes annual domiciliary medical cover, plus a Group Hospitalisation Scheme with INR 500,000 floater cover for your immediate family.

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. Notional tax will be deducted if you are not liable to pay local tax.

Please note - BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. Some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
