View Vacancy - Economic and Public Policy Officer (ESP23.635)
The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s Spain Network (including offices in nine locations). We are looking for an Economic and Public Policy Officer.
This is an opportunity to support the British government’s objectives in Spain as part of the Economic and Public Policy Team, which sits within the Embassy’s Political and Economic Section.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Identify trends in the Spanish economy using national and regional economic data; analyse key sectors and UK-Spain commercial links; and follow the public debate on the economy and developments in the private sector, while maintaining a good awareness of the political context. Provide written reports for colleagues in the Embassy and officials in the UK, ensuring that they are aware of key developments and to support their understanding of the economic situation in Spain;
- Follow and report on developments in relevant policy areas in Spain and the UK, such as Next Generation EU funds, economic security, and structural reform, analysing their impact both within Spain and on the bilateral relationship;
- Create and maintain relationships within UK government and with external contacts to support the delivery of the responsibilities above;
- Draft briefings and speeches for the Ambassador and Embassy colleagues to support official visits across Spain;
- Contribute to the organisation and running of Embassy events.
- Proficient user in both written and spoken English and Spanish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*);
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, including data organisation, recording and storage in a logical and user-friendly way, and analysis;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Dynamic and hardworking, with ability to work on own initiative
- Educational background in economics, public policy, international relations or related field;
- Experience presenting complex data in engaging ways;
- Experience drafting analytical reports;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel;
- Keen interest in current affairs;
- Knowledge of workings of Spanish and UK governments..
This is a full-time permanent contract. Normal working hours are 37.5 per week. The British Embassy Madrid supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering.
The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
