Internship

Due to COVID-19, you may experience some delay in the progress of this recruitment campaign. We are working hard to minimise any disruption. You may find more information in the Additional Information section below.

The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE)) and is now looking to recruit Interns for the Department of International Trade and specifically for the Export Growth team.

These internships will have up to 6 months duration. Ideally, three positions would run in the period April-September 2021 and three other positions in the period October 2021 to March 2022 ( applicants will be requested to indicate preferred start date).

The Department for International Trade (DIT) promotes British trade & investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services overseas; and works to break down barriers to trade & investment. The DIT team in France is located in the British Embassy in Paris and offices in Lyon and Bordeaux. The interns would support our Export Growth team, primarily working with British exporters, and also prioritised sector campaigns in areas like clean growth and tech (and covering exports, investment and market access issues).

These internships will be an excellent introduction to how government supports businesses that are internationalising and, more generally, to how an Embassy works. There will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues working across the Embassy on issues like economic relations, market access, science & innovation and marketing and communications. The work will be demanding and, to get the most from the opportunity, the interns would need to be flexible, committed self-starters able to juggle priorities and work in a wide variety of business sectors to tight timelines.

Roles and responsibilities:

Provision of tailored information and support to individual UK export clients in a wide variety of sectors: including new exporters and companies new to the French market.

Research into trade and investment trends, new opportunities around France; and prioritised industries and sectors – resulting in the production of new resources for business (including market promotion materials).

Planning and delivery of commercial events linked to the Europe Regional Trade Plan and established France trade & investment campaigns – including webinars; one-to-one meeting programmes; trade missions; and networking events. The short-term focus given the health situation will be virtual.

Full professional proficiency in English and French, including excellent writing skills* (C1 Level)- assessed at interview (Interns will work in both languages)

Computer literate (Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Sharepoint);

Previous commercial experience of any kind could be useful.

Good project management, including an eye for detail, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery have been thought through carefully.

Customer focus: a concern for quality and drive for continuous improvement in the service provided.

Excellent communication skills to work well with commercial clients, external contacts and a wide and diverse Embassy team.

Drive and enthusiasm combined with the ability to deliver, working as part of a team.

Resourcefulness and ability to act on own initiative, with an ability to find creative solutions when the unexpected occurs.
