Main purpose of job:

The Trade Policy Team, within the British High Commission in New Delhi, leads on the UK’s bilateral trade relationships across South Asia. The team is responsible for improving market access for UK companies including through supporting negotiations on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with India, expanding work to reduce market access barriers across South Asia to benefit businesses and citizens of both countries, and for promoting the rules based international trading system across the region in support of British business.

This role will will provide an opportunity to lead the British High Commissions work on trade statistics, reporting, multilateral engagement and support the delivery of programme funded work. This will suit an experienced trade professional with experience and knowledge of trade policy. The role will demand an ability to approach your work in a proactive and independent manner, apply a high level attention to detail, and build high value relationships.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

In this role you will be responsible for:

1. Bilateral Trade Statistics and Reporting (25%)

You will lead the British High Commissions Trade reporting, including overseeing;

  • The Monthly Trade Report, the team’s flagship analysis of trade and trade policy developments in India.
  • The Fortnightly Trade New Summary, the team’s flagship flash-alert capturing the latest news updates on Indian trade and trade policy.
  • Detailed and quarterly trade statistics reports based on Government trade data.
  • Ad hoc reporting on key trade policy developments India including following the Indian budget, and other relevant policy changes.

2. Policy Advice and Engagement (25%) 

  • Provide trade policy related policy advice and stakeholder engagement/influencing focussed on UK Government Priorities.
  • Advise on and implement appropriate strategies to advance trade policy interests in line with UK interests.
  • Foster a network of contacts with key Indian policy makers and opinion formers within and outside the Government of india, including facilitating high-level trade related engagements and meetings for senior staff at the British High Commission.
  • Support engagement with key internal and external stakeholders. Working with all members of the trade policy team, contribute to a database based on a comprehensive stakeholder mapping. 

3. Bilateral Programming and Engagement (25%)

  • Work closely with project managers to provide technical policy advice on trade related projects at scoping, design and implementation stages and act as the lead policy officer for these projects. This could include but not be limited on standards, trade facilitation and customs related activity.
  • Support market access work led by the British High Commission to remove market access barriers faced by UK companies operating in India. 

4. Multilateral Trade Policy (25%)

  • Lead the British High Commissions engagement with the Government of India on multilateral trade policy priorities including commitments under the G20 and World Trade Organisation.
  • Deliver the UK-India Multilateral Trade Dialogue to build deeper engagement and cooperation between the UK and India on multilateral trade issues.
  • Provide relevant reporting and intelligence to UK Officials in London and Geneva on India’s positions in multilateral institutions.

Qualifications:

Graduate in Economics, International Relations, Business, or other related field.

Experience:

  • Candidate should have 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Prior experience in engaging with senior business/ government stakeholders
  • Experience managing and working with statistics and analytical work

Desirable:     

  • A strong understanding of Government of India’s policy making structures/environment
  • Experience in doing economic analysis
  • Understanding of Indian Trade policy

For other than BHC candidates, Basic Salary will be INR 110,484 per month together with a 12% provident fund and 6% Special Allowance

No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided.

Please note - BHC does not deduct tax at source and employees are required to ensure that any requirements of local income-tax law are complied with in full. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
