Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will provide political reporting and analysis on security related issues in Bangladesh; your understanding of social media and online communications will be key in achieving this. You will use your language skills to provide timely and thorough translations & research; developing a network of contacts to inform this reporting and analysis for both internal and external audiences. You will be responsible for ensuring the political team have the right contacts in the right places to really get under the skin of what is going on in Bangladesh. There will also be an element of programme management work. As well as providing ad hoc support in the coordination of events and visits on behalf of the British High Commission. You will be managed by the Second Secretary Political.  

Roles and Responsibilities:

Reporting and Research:

  • Lead research, including translations, on political and security related issues to inform understanding and to assist in development and evaluation of programme work by the UK Government.  
  • Develop and use network of contacts to inform reporting and monitoring of developments in country.
  • Support the wider political team and other sections in the mission by providing informed, timely and strategically aware analysis on security related issues.
  • Undertake proactive and reactive open source research (with mapping) on topics of interest to the BHC, verify this research with expert contacts and use it to increase depth and breadth of understanding, often to tight deadlines.

Stakeholder Engagement and Programme Support:

  • Develop and maintain a diverse network of contacts and use this network to inform understanding, identify opportunities and support UK priorities across Bangladesh. A key part of this job will be ensuring that UK policy makers are getting out and seeing the right people. 
  • Support delivery of programmes including monthly financial forecasting & performance/compliance reporting with additional ad hoc budget management tasks.

Visits and Events Organisation:

  • Organise, accompany and support senior staff on visits and produce timely and informative records of meetings.
  • Co-ordinate visits & events, including proposing events, whilst overseeing administration to ensure success and on occasion attending to provide support.

Language requirements:  

Essential Language: English and Bangla 

Level of language required: Exceptional command of written and spoken English and Bangla.  

Desirable Language:  Sylheti

Working patterns:It is a full-time position based in Dhaka but with the potential for travel to other parts of the country required.

Learning and development opportunities: 

Opportunity to study for City and Guilds Diploma in UK Foreign Policy and Diplomacy; FCO programme and project management courses.

Essential: 

  • Education: Bachelors degree; ideally in International Relations or similar
  • Knowledge of Bangladeshi politics, state institutions and key influencers.
  • Have strong IT (particularly MS Word, Excel and Outlook) and knowledge of the internet and social media for use in research work.
  • A proactive dynamic individual with a can-do attitude, who works well in a team.
  • Be well organised and able to demonstrate flexibility.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to combine objectivity with discretion.
  • Have a track record in managing and prioritising your workload.
  • Confidence and commitment to deliver with minimal supervision.

Desirable: 

  • Programme management experience.
  • Experience of working on security and/or political issues.
  • Experience of working with international partners.

SALARY PACKAGE:

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, salary will be BDT 88,705 per month.
