The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s France Network (including offices in Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseilles and representation to international organisations in Paris (OECD and UNESCO) and Strasbourg (CoE).

The UK Delegation to the OECD is currently looking for a Policy AdvisorTrade and Investment.

The jobholder will lead within the Delegation on trade and investment to deliver a competitive and modern approach to trade, investment and open economies, aligned with UK objectives. You will act as the main point of contact on these issues with policy leads in the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) and with UK delegates to the relevant OECD committees and working parties. 

The jobholder will need to develop effective working relationships with generalist and specialist stakeholders in Whitehall, the OECD Secretariat and the 38 other OECD delegations. A solid background in economic and trade policy will ensure the jobholder is a credible interlocutor for senior Department for International Trade officials as well as for senior OECD officials.

You will be working within a team that covers economic and social policy and as a senior policy official you will be expected to deliver wider team objectives including on G20/G7, Ministerial engagement/visits, cross cutting projects that the OECD run, and support the team leader on key economic and statistic committees.

The jobholder will also need to respond flexibly to changing priorities, be able to work independently, plan ahead effectively and maintain strategic oversight of their portfolio.

There will also be the opportunity to contribute to the corporate objectives of the Delegation and to engage with the UK’s bilateral embassy to France. 

The jobholder will work closely with the Trade and Agriculture Directorate at the OECD and with key government Departments (notably Department for International Trade (DIT) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) to ensure that OECD work supports UK policy priorities. Specifically the jobholder will be responsible for:

  • Work with DIT to prepare the UK positions at OECD committee meetings, negotiate with other member states and represent the UK at ad hoc OECD events where issues relevant to UK trade and investment policy are being discussed.
  • Ensuring the OECD provides robust analysis and evidence-based recommendations to support effective UK policy making on trade and investment.
  • Coordinating the delegation’s work on the G20, G7 agenda and UK input on  cross cutting projects that the OECD run including those relating to climate change, data, and housing policy.
  • Support the team leader prepare delegates and UK positions ahead of key economic and statistic meetings.
  • Play a strong corporate role within the mission.
  • Economic and/or Trade policy undergraduate or higher degree
  • Proficiency in English including excellent writing skills* (C1 Level)
  • Min. intermediate level of French both written and spoken
  • Experience in engaging with senior external stakeholders and building and delivering through a network of contacts
  • Excellent interpersonal and representational skills to publicly represent the UK Government
  • Adaptable, agile approach able to flex and lean into new/changing priorities as they arise
  • good IT skills
  • An understanding of British Government institutions and a background in some or all of the thematic areas covered would be an advantage
  • Experience of working in a government body and/ or multilateral organisation
