The British Embassy, Muscat has vacancy for the post of a Driver/PRO, Grade – A1 (L).

 

Main purpose of job:

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with the delivery of effective government relations duties including liaison with a wide range of government authorities, representing the British Embassy in a professional manner with external stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient customer service to internal and external customers.

To facilitate diplomatic business by ensuring the safe and secure transportation of the Ambassador, Very Important Persons (VIPs), Embassy staff,  letters, invitations, documents to various locations within Oman and Protocol duties.

Reporting to the Head of Corporate Services and supervised by the Principle PRO, this is a challenging role that requires excellent interpersonal and customer focus skills. This role is a full-time, 2 year fixed term contact.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• PRO:

- Assisting the principle PRO in liaising with Omani authorities on a wide range of government relations tasks on behalf of the British Embassy including but not exclusively with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Immigration, Royal Oman Police, Customs, Muscat and Bousher Municipalities and the Government Relations Officers in other regional missions.

- Draft note verbalès for Omani government departments.

- Prepare paperwork and scan documents for staff applications including for Residence visas, ID cards, MFA official passes, driving licences, car registration, liquor licences, UAF and heavy baggage.

- Obtain staff business and visit visas from other Embassies and consulates.

- Create and maintain database of staff member’s personal documents and updating the database when personal details change.

- Assist the Manager and Officer with VIP/VVIPs visits.

- Support the processing of the Diplomatic mailbag.

•    Support Driver:

- Driving the Embassy pool car and ensuring safe and secure transportation of the Officers, including the Ambassador, for appointments, official business and social engagements etc. outside the Embassy.

- When covering for the Ambassadors driver: liaising with the Ambassador’s Executive Assistant (EA) on diary and scheduling requirements; spotting any potential logistical problems and advising on journey times, and (where there are multiple engagements to attend in short order), advising on the most logical programme to adopt.

- Driving for VIPs, official visitors, other staff as and when required.

•    Vehicle maintenance, cleaning, registration and servicing:

- Cleaning and performing basic vehicle maintenance checks (eg, engine oil, tyre pressure and water) on a weekly basis.

- Taking official vehicles to the Traffic Department for tests and submitting paperwork (eg, car renewal documents and driving license). 

- Notifying the Embassy Protocol Officer when official vehicles require servicing (at regular mileage intervals), and taking official vehicles to the garage to be serviced.

• Collaborating and Partnering: Requires working collaboratively, sharing information and building supportive, responsive relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, whilst having the confidence to challenge assumptions.

Essential:
• Fluent in written and spoken English and Arabic (this will be tested)
• Qualified defensive driver
• Familiarity with PRO work
• Applicants must be Omani nationals
• Experienced driver with a valid Omani driving licence.
• Good knowledge of MS Office, including Word and Outlook

Desirable:
• Mechanics qualification

Working Conditions and Remuneration:

The Embassy offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for the role, including: salary of 640 Omani Riyals per month inclusive of all allowances; recreational facilities including a swimming pool and social club.

Normal working hours are 07:30 – 14:30 Sunday to Thursday. 

The Embassy has excellent working conditions and recreational facilities including a swimming pool and social club. There is a holiday entitlement of 30 days per year (pro rated) following successful completion of a 3 month probation period. Holidays that have already been booked will be honoured. There are also national holidays determined annually by the Embassy which usually total 14 days per year.
