The British High Commission in Cyprus is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an energetic, efficient and innovative Press and Public Affairs Officer to join its team. Based in Nicosia, the Press and Public Affairs Officer will work alongside the Head of Communications and with colleagues across the High Commission, including the High Commissioner, to communicate and explain UK policy priorities to a Cypriot audience through media relations, digital outreach, innovative public diplomacy activities and strategic communications campaigns. The jobholder will also monitor local media and provide timely reporting of coverage of the UK and issues related to our priorities in order to better inform our work. He/she will also provide research and political analysis on political developments in Cyprus, and identify and deliver opportunities for UK partnership and engagement on our priorities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor local media (including social media) on a daily basis and raise important coverage of the UK and of issues related to our policy priorities in a timely manner, to better inform our work. Develop close working relationship with Turkish Cypriot counterpart who provides daily monitoring of Turkish Cypriot media, to provide a coherent picture of developments on the island;
  • Work with Political team to provide timely research and political analysis on political developments in Cyprus of relevance to our priorities;
  • Work to enhance and deliver the High Commission’s Communications Strategy in support of our objectives, planning and executing content in print, broadcast and social media, evaluating its impact and continually improving our communications performance, including through the use of social media monitoring tools and analytics;
  • Work with colleagues across the High Commission – from defence to our political, prosperity, consular, trade and investment and other teams – to help translate our priorities and objectives into communications output which will help deliver our policy priorities across the board. Follow central communications campaigns from London and adapt them to local audiences, and create innovative and engaging content to increase our reach;
  • Act as primary point of contact with the Cypriot media, fielding media enquiries and developing and responding to requests for High Commission engagement. Proactively build relations with key media and provide day to day management of our overall media engagement;
  • Opportunity to attend Foreign and Commonwealth Office core communications officer training course, usually held in London; and 1-2 twice yearly regional communications conferences/ training sessions at regional communications hub in Madrid.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Greek;
  • Experience between 3 to 5 years in communications, preferably with a governmental or international organisation or working in journalism as a political analyst Interest and knowledge of politics and foreign affairs, particularly UK-Cyprus relations;
  • Media handling skills, including building relationships with journalists and experience in arranging interviews and press briefings;
  • Excellent team working and inter-personal skills, including experience of working with senior representatives;
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, proactive and flexible;
  • Proven ability to deliver results and handle multiple projects;
  • Ability to provide concise and timely political analysis of political developments in Cyprus relevant to a UK audience;
  • Experience of using social media in a professional context, including Twitter and Facebook, and some knowledge of analytics and social media monitoring tools (eg: HootSuite) preferred;

This is a permanent full time position of 37.5 hours per week. Monday to Friday, from 7.30 to14.45. Some media monitoring preferred at weekends/ evenings for important breaking issues.

Occasional travel only, including overseas for regional conferences/ training courses.

The confirmation of appointment is subject to professional background checks and security clearance procedures, as well as the successful completion of a 6 month probation period.

The successful candidate must be free of any convictions, and undergo a UK security clearance process.
