The British Embassy in Tbilisi is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and we are now looking for a Vice Consul to deliver the consular strategy in Georgia.

The new hire will oversee the provision of consular assistance and services to British nationals in Georgia, prepare for and responding to crisis, contribute to the delivery of the regional consular business plan (including supervision of staff in neighbouring posts) and contributing to the wider corporate goals of the Embassy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To lead day-to-day operations of the Consular Section in Georgia, including to implement change processes that deliver a more efficient service, be accountable for all financial and other consular assets, and ensure the Embassy is providing effectively all fee bearing services and frontline consular assistance to British nationals within the scope of the Consular strategy, in line with Consular guidance;
  • Ensure the Embassy’s consular functions are prepared to respond to any consular emergency or crisis, including to identify and train non-consular staff to be ready to assist when needed; and maintain and test consular input to the Embassy’s Crisis Management Plan;
  • Provide consular assistance to British nationals across Georgia, including hospital and prison visits; leading on sensitive assistance cases such as rape, child abduction and domestic abuse, performing vulnerability assessments; and ensuring the correct course of action is taken in each individual case in line with Consular guidance;
  • Develop and maintain positive, professional and trusting working relationships with all external Consular stakeholders in Georgia to support the delivery of day-to-day consular assistance and crisis response; monitor trends in case work to identify outreach priorities and lead on all outreach initiatives;
  • Plan and deliver consular preventative initiatives and communication campaigns, engaging with the Embassy’s communication team and feeding consular messages through Embassy social media channels where appropriate. Ensure all publicly available information on consular services in Georgia (e.g. on gov.uk) is accurate and up-to-date;
  • Provide direction and support for consular sections in Baku, Yerevan and Ashgabat remotely and with regional visits when travel allowed.

  • Full professional proficiency in English and Georgian, including excellent writing skills (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
  • Solid experience in a customer facing role and ability to respond to a wide range of customer needs;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams);
  • Excellent communicator, strong outreach and networking skills;
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, plus the ability to work without close supervision;
  • Willingness and ability to travel occasionally within the wider Eastern Europe & Central Asia consular regional network and to work out of hours at short notice if required;
  • Resilience and resistance to trauma; ability to cope with the challenging nature of consular work.
  • Line management experience;
  • Professional background in social work and/ or providing support to others would be an advantage;
  • Good general knowledge of the Georgian administrative system, including the justice system, laws and regulations, and social services;
  • Experience of managing a budget;
  • Experience of developing communications campaigns.

This is a full-time, permanent position, 40 hours per week.

The gross monthly salary is 6,979 GEL (gross). Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax and state pension contributions required by local law.

The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background check and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Tbilisi is subject to local Terms and Conditions of Service.

It is important to note that the consular caseworker role is very demanding and will entail dealing with casework in situations that may involve death, detention, rape and sexual assault and prison visits. You will be required to deal face to face with highly distressed customers who may be in shock, grieving and in a crisis situation. Candidates should therefore have a high level of resilience to trauma.
