The jobholder will advise the British Embassy on internal political issues and human rights. The jobholder will play an important role in the Political & Press team and will lead on elements of the embassy’s engagement with the democratic transition and relationship with civil society, working closely with senior embassy staff. The jobholder should develop wide-ranging personal networks with key stakeholders across the political and civil society space and will be expected to provide independent reporting and analysis on political & human rights issues. 


The job will also include management responsibility for an A2 Programme Officer and overseeing management of the Embassy’s devolved programme funds.

 

  • Provide up to date and accurate reporting and analysis on internal political and human rights developments.
  • Develop a wide-ranging personal network of contacts with civil society (including through delivery of the CSO Engagement Strategy), political parties and other organisations to help inform proactive independent analysis on events and consequences/implications for the UK.
  • Lead on human rights issues including political and civil freedoms and inter-communal relations.  Develop an independent network of contacts across the civil society and political space, report on human rights abuses, legislative developments and wider trends and recommend UK interventions. 
  • Line management of 1xA2 Programme Officer and oversight of Bilateral Programme Fund (~£200,000)

The exact portfolio is flexible and will depend on the skills and experience of the jobholder and the requirements of the political team.

  • Strong Burmese and English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively to staff and external parties
  • Understanding of the wider political & economic context in Myanmar
  • Personal drive and the ability to be a self-starter as well as a team player
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • The job holder must be prepared to travel within the country
  • Previous management experience

The British Embassy Rangoon offers a competitive remuneration package, including salary, benefits, leave entitlement of 22 days per annum (calculated in pro rata).
