Main purpose of job:

Act as principal liaison person between Team GB and Paralympics GB and UK Sports governing bodies and the relevant Japanese counterparties on pre-games and games time training camps and facilities.  Create competitive advantage for UK teams in support of their medal targets.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Build and maintain a network of Japanese contacts related to UK teams’ training arrangements for Olympics, Paralympics and Rugby World Cup.  This will include but not be limited to the governments of Yokohama City, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Minato Ward and the Tokyo Government.  Leverage this network to gain competitive advantage for the teams, including trouble-shooting on accommodation, transport, food, equipment etc. 

Act as main contact point for Performance Directors (and their staff) for the British Olympic Association, British Paralympic Association, Rugby Unions and sports governing bodies.  Provide them with advice and support as necessary in their pre-competition preparations based on knowledge of local conditions an issues and intelligence on what other teams and the organising committees are doing on the ground.

Working with the outreach team and teams across the embassy, use their games-related networks and interaction with host-city and provincial governments to look for wider opportunities in Yokohama, Kawasaki and other UK training locations across the full range of Embassy business, in support of the Japan network’s objectives and as part of the Global Sports Programme Management team.

  • Experience engaging with senior stakeholders in Japan
  • Good interpersonal and organisation skills to conduct duties effectively.
  • IT skills including the Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Flexible, dependable, enthusiastic and customer focused and enjoy taking on challenging responsibilities.
  • Level of language required: Fluent Japanese speaker with good command of English (speaking, reading and writing) or vice versa.
  • Three or more years of relevant working experience
  • Experience of working in an English speaking environment
  • Line management experience

Alongside a number of Embassy-specific courses that will need to be completed on arrival, the Embassy is supportive of learning and development. We offer five development days per year, and regular opportunities for learning and development delivered both within the mission and regionally in Asia. We also focus on using coaching and a buddying system to support new arrivals.

The contract is until October 2020, on 1 year renewable contracts


Monday – Friday 9:00 – 17:30, 7.5 working hours per day

However, the nature of the working day will differ depending on the events and visits organised.
