The UK Department for International Trade (DIT), part of the British Embassy Brussels represents British trade interests overseas. The DIT team is looking for a Defence and Security Trade  Adviser focusing on the Defence and Security sectors. This is a high profile role and represents an excellent opportunity for a dynamic professional with relevant business experience.

As part of a small team and a wide network, the job holder will have a leading role in liaising with UK companies to support them in the pursuit of commercial opportunities in NATO as part of the DIT Benelux Defence and Security High-Value Campaign team. Main objective will be to increase and promote UK Business contacts with NATO and help British companies win business.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Assist UK companies to capitalise on major commercial opportunities in NATO and provide professional advice and support to UK companies wishing to develop business within the NATO family with the objective of reaching export wins;
  • Collaborate with British companies to ensure they are as competitive and prepared as possible to win business, including pipeline development and early planning;
  • Build and manage a network of stakeholders and partners in NATO as well as in the UK;
  • Contribute to campaign planning and delivery in support of business services to companies;
  • Work with different teams in multiple locations and also with commercial partners as part of structured campaign activity;
  • Organise events with the aim of increasing the visibility of NATO opportunities to UK industry, as well as increasing the visibility of UK industry within NATO;
  • Contribute to the work of the commercial team ensuring the delivery of agreed and set trade team targets and contribute to the wider economic diplomacy agenda of the British Embassy.
  • Excellent organisational, presentation, and networking skills;
  • Demonstrate a flexible , a pro-active and entrepreneurial attitude;
  • Excellent team work and people skills;
  • Effective time management: able to handle the multiple priorities of the role within the agreed deadline;
  • Strong account management experience and excellent customer relation building skills;
  • Ability to be a discrete and a trusted commercial operator in a very controlled environment and deal with senior level customers;
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Business level knowledge of French and/or Dutch;
  • Good Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook);
  • Flexibility for occasional out of hours work and travel to the UK.
  • Good knowledge of NATO structures and processes;
  • Experience in a business development or trade/investment promotion discipline;
  • Experience of dealing with business in an international context.

Terms and conditions

Must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly salary for this position is €3,865.39 B3 (L) level (The British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium salaries are not subject to annual indexation).

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
