The British Government’s Defence Section (BDSUS) at the British Embassy in Washington DC has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and detail orientated person to join the Visits and Events Team as Visits & Events Officer. This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the special relationship between the UK and the US, working at the forefront organising all visits to Washington by Ministers, British Defence Officials, Ministers, Parliamentary Committees, and senior officials. The position offers unique exposure to UK and US Government leaders and procedures of international diplomacy in order to make a real difference globally. In this role you would be working in a diverse international environment side-by-side with UK diplomats, armed forces personnel and other country-based staff operating across the British Government’s network of Consulates and Government Offices in the United States. This network provides a platform for approximately 30 Government departments and agencies to conduct their work in the United States and is made up of over 900 staff with a rich and diverse background, skill sets, and experiences. This is a chance to directly contribute to the way in which both Governments collaborate and negotiate on Defence. The work of the Visits and Events Section spans the broad spectrum of the Embassy’s activity. The Visits Section is part of the Defence Attaché’s Executive Office, and the Ambassador takes a keen interest in the work of the Defence Section The ideal candidate will have experience working with the Government of the UK, particularly in Defence and be a team player, with the ability to be shift focus and resolve conflicting priorities at pace, be a clear communicator, unphased by dealing with senior government representatives and a team player.

Learning and development opportunities On taking up post you will have to complete Data Protection training which is mandated for this post as well as in house training on Defence IT. The learning and development opportunities, including through formal training courses, are excellent. The job provides scope to broaden knowledge and experience through getting involved in the breadth of UK/US Defence Engagement. |
Working patterns Requires standard working pattern of 40 hours per week but does not require set working hours each day as evening and weekend working is a requirement of this position but some flexible working may be considered in consultation with the line manager. The post holder must be able to start work immediately once relevant clearances have been obtained.
