Background:

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government’s international business development agency. DIT USA, working closely with DIT and other agencies in the United Kingdom, is charged with transatlantic trade development between the UK and the US, and with assisting US companies looking to invest in the UK. DIT USA works closely with DIT Headquarters in London, together with representatives of the three Devolved Administrations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and other departmental agencies in the UK.

Based in Houston, the successful applicant will be a part of the 12 person DIT team responsible for the Southern region. He/she will engage with diverse clients and stakeholders across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico, and report to the Head of Trade & Investment, Houston. Focusing on oil & gas, the TIO will proactively focus on supporting UK-based oil & gas companies to enter or grow their business in the US, and helping innovative US-based companies capitalise on commercial opportunities in the UK. Focus will be on accessing opportunities for companies, managing DIT’s relationships with strategic accounts, and driving regional activity within the US in support of major campaigns and export deals for the UK.

We’re looking for someone who is excited about partnering with innovative companies to assist in their growth, someone who knows how to juggle multiple projects, switches gears easily, and understands how to prioritise. This role will be responsible for working with large multi-national companies from both the South and the UK, as well as early-stage, innovative companies bringing new and exciting products to market.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Forge strong relationships with US and UK business leaders, trade associations and other key partners. Strategically manage a diverse portfolio of accounts in the sub-sectors mentioned above. Formulate strategies with US companies who are looking to set up in the UK, as well as support US companies who are poised for expansion in the UK.
  • Through lead generation conducted by the Business Development Associate, conduct approximately 100 sales meetings and/or calls over the fiscal year.
  • Plan and deliver high impact events such as round-table dinners, seminars, VIP visits and Missions. Highlight the strengths of the UK, including the dynamic life sciences ecosystem in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Identify and assist innovative UK oil & gas companies who are market ready and looking for US business opportunities. Provide top notch support to include identifying supply chain opportunities, making high-level introductions, delivering custom market research reports, managing events, and coordinating visit programs.    
  • Identify and assist innovative US oil & gas companies who are ready for global business opportunities. Act as their trusted advisor for international expansion, and promote the UK as the number one location for investment.
  • Monitor market trends and contribute to US-wide, sector-focused strategic planning.
  • Represent DIT and the British Consulate at external US and UK events.
  • Manage one Business Development Associate.
  • Contribute to cross-Consulate and cross-sector activities.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • 6-8 years relevant work experience in sales and/or business development, including lead generation, and account/project management.
  • Demonstrated experience meeting and/or exceeding challenging targets.
  • Knowledge of the UK business environment and UK investment proposition, and a strong motivation to increase knowledge and contacts in life sciences and advanced engineering.
  • Excellent research, writing and presentation skills. Attention to detail. Strong networking skills.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a closely-knit team towards shared trade and investment goals, as well as in a global virtual team environment.
  • Previous management experience.
  • Computer literacy in standard Microsoft applications and Client Relationship Management (CRM) software.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to undertake domestic and international air travel, including overnight stays.
