The Strategic Programs Royal Navy (SPRN) office is collocated within the US Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Headquarters in the Washington Navy Yard (WNY), Washington DC, SPRN is a small multidisciplinary team which consists of both Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence Civilian staff who represent the Chief Strategic Systems Executive (CSSE) in the US and operate under the authority of the 1963 Polaris Sales Agreement (PSA). As well as the main SPRN team in WNY, SPRN posts are situated in Dahlgren VA, Kings Bay GA and Cape Canaveral FL.

CSSE is a Director within the UK Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), which provides all key functions of the acquisition and material support for the Royal Navy Submarine Flotilla. CSSE is also responsible for delivering the UK Nuclear Deterrent program.

SPRN has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, driven person to join the UK team. This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the special relationship between the UK and US, working at the forefront of international relations in order to maintain UK programme requirements.

This is a chance to directly contribute to the way both Governments collaborate under the auspices of the PSA. This post is ideally suited to the partner/spouse of a UK national posted to the US.


Roles and responsibilities:

The administrative post will work directly to the SPRN Office Coordinator and have the following responsibilities.
Processing of UK visit requests, including database management.

  • Processing of UK visit requests, including database management.
  • Processing of unclassified and classified mail, including letters and reports.
  • Maintaining the paper and electronic filing system iaw JSP440.
  • Ordering and maintaining stationary account.
  • Support to new joiners for access and IT requirements.
  • Diary management for SPRN Head and Deputy Head.
  • Provision of support to SPRN team members out with WNY to include meeting coordination and courier/mail deliveries, SDA corporate information management and briefing.
  • Any other admin tasks as directed by line management.

Working patterns:  

This role is 24 hours a week but does require set working hours each day. Due to the nature of the post and roles of SPRN, Hybrid or flexible working is not available for this role. Leave and other entitlements in accordance with the British Embassy and US HMG Network Locally Engaged Staff Handbook.


Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

This role does not hold staff or budget management responsibilities.

  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise, follow extant processes and work under own initiative.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. The post holder must be able interact and communicate with individuals at all levels.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to be able to liaison with both UK and US partners and customers.
  • Proficient IT skills with the ability to interact with MS Office suite applications.

Owing to the program security requirements, the post is “Reserved” for personnel with sole UK Nationality. The successful candidate will require a minimum of UK SC level security clearance. If this is not already held, the candidate must be willing to undergo security vetting to achieve this.

Language requirements:

Language: English

Level of language required: GCSE or equivalent.

Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*. •    Previous experience of working in a mixed civilian/military office or team environment.
•    Previous experience of handling classified information.
