Cook/Chef, Residence Coordinator

Main Purpose of Job:

  • Prepare meals and refreshments at the British Ambassador’s residence, including for meetings and events (lunches, dinners, buffets, receptions and social gatherings). Working with external caterers on larger events throughout the year. 
  • Supervise events and the running of the residence. Order and procure supplies, ensuring efficiency and value for money at all times.
  • Manage all aspects of kitchen hygiene, including cleaning and washing up.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Menu planning and preparation in accordance with set budgets and requirements; adjust plans according to customer’s requirements (eg special dietary requirements) and changing circumstances
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene to high standards, of kitchen/pantry areas and all tools/equipment including work surfaces and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Ensure quality of produce, efficient control of stocks and resupply to ensure value for money and minimum waste, and account promptly and fully for any expenditure
  • Support the Residence Manager in preparing for and supervising larger events, including hiring, overseeing and working with casual staff as required; share information on kitchen requirements and plans
  • Support Residence Manager with inventories (drinks, kitchen supplies, etc), maintenance and any other Residence needs
  • Support Residence Manager in supervising the Residence Cleaner
  • High quality cooking skills on a range of international cuisines.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in business hospitality, ie. hotel, private residence, restaurant, catering company, with similar role and responsibilities.
  • Strong organisational skills, able to work under pressure delivering a high quality service.
  • Understanding of the impact of the role and security and reputational risks associated with the Residence and wider Embassy; the Residence is a representational platform to deliver UK public diplomacy.
  • Ability to change and review practices with other members of the team with a view to improve service.
  • Able to work collaboratively whilst showing a good degree of autonomy and effective work and time management, and ability to work to deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and ability to plan and manage own work
  • Spanish and English (basic spoken English and ability to follow recipes in English)
  • Must have the legal status to live and work in El Salvador

Learning and Development Opportunities:

The British Embassy is committed to the learning and development of its staff.  The Residence Supervisor will have access to online learning resources and will be required to undertake some general training.  Limited funding is also available for more specialised training.

This position might suit a candidate with catering experience who is seeking greater autonomy and the change to further develop their organisational skills.

Working Patterns:

This is a full time position with 40 hours/week.

Flexible working is required for occasional early morning, evening duties and weekend events. Extra hours worked will be compensated with TOIL (time off in lieu).

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
