Main purpose of job:

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) Ulaanbaatar started its operations within the British Embassy in 2013 with an objective to increase trade and investment between the UK and Mongolia. 

We are currently looking to recruit a temporary Trade & Investment officer to join a small and busy team. The successful candidate will play a key role in assisting UK companies to do business in Mongolia through providing advice and market research, facilitating meetings, and organising events.

This position is advertised on a temporary basis for one (1) year.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

  • Proactively support the DBT Country Director and Head of M&I in achieving DBT targets, e.g. Mining and Infrastructure HVC Export Win (EW) targets. This involves organising events and activities that support British companies and raise the profile of the British Embassy, leading on developing and delivering a strategic marketing campaign that uses the full range of tools and resources to deliver the behavioural changes needed to meet DBT’s targets.
  • Be responsible for the Education sector and look after other non-mining sectors (clean energy, agriculture, healthcare).
  • Develop extensive knowledge in at least two sectors, being aware of developments and spotting opportunities for British companies. 
  • Be responsible for GREAT campaign. Write Great challenge fund (GCF) bids, proactively carry out events with the help of the team and submit evaluation reports (also will be in charge of project procurement and managing project budget).  
  • Proactively develop, maintain, and manage relationships with the key stakeholders in the UK and Mongolia, including Mongolian Government departments, public sector companies, regulatory bodies, International Development agencies, and major domestic/ international private companies, as well as colleagues in the London, Istanbul and Hong Kong Marketing hubs and in the region.
  • Write market reports for British companies as part of OMIS.
  • Respond to enquiries from British companies and do follow up. 
  • Support trade missions and high level visits and contribute to briefs where necessary. 
  • Provide translation support for HMA/DHM and trade mission companies.
  • Handle DBT team invoices and payment through payment system (manage Marcomms and project budget) 
  • Support the delivery of wider DBT/ Embassy priorities as these develop.
  • Good knowledge of Mongolian business environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work with people of different levels and backgrounds
  • Understanding of campaign/project planning & event delivery
  • Able to take initiative, a self starter who is able to work with little supervision
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Mongolian
  • Good command of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Educated to degree level
  • Team work skills
  • Effective time management skills
  • Knowledge and experience of marketing and social media  
  • Commercial experience is desirable but not essential
  • Private sector experience is desirable but not essential
