Main purpose of job:

The British Defence Staff is looking for a Post Office Counter Clerk to work within the British Forces Post Office (BFPO), who will report directly to the Head BFPO 2 in charge of the British Forces Post Office Washington.

The BFPO provides a comprehensive counter facility which includes the sale of UK postage stamps, Postal Orders and the ability to withdraw Cash with Chip and Pin. This is a part time position.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Maintain sufficient counter stock and cash as laid down in the standard stock list once per week.
  • Ensure the upkeep of the account’s instructions and post office procedures by means of amendments issued by Accounts Branch in HQ BFPO.
  • Complete forms daily, weekly and monthly balance of the Accounts spread sheet in respect of all sales and transactions for that day including, but not limited to: Cash remittances, Stamps sold, and Cash withdrawn.
  • Notify the Line Manager if the cash on hand exceeds the acceptable holding limit as per the standard stock summary, Liaise with BDS Finance in respect of gaining extra cash.
  • Produce monthly serial sheets in respect of forthcoming mail despatches to UK and BFPO London which includes completing a daily sheet to show the number of bags received and weights.
  • Prepare and complete airway bills for mail and bag labels including flight details, bag number, serial of dispatch, date of dispatch, bag weight, and signature.
  • Checking of daily flight status to determine the cut off times for dispatch.
  • Daily completion of daily balance sheet in respect of all special delivery items, to include number and inventory of items on hand at the close of business daily.
  • Liaise with customers and help answer their questions as necessary.
  • Minimum High school diploma or equivalent;
  • A proven track record of meeting established goals with accuracy and speed;
  • Sound arithmetic knowledge and electronic point of sale (EPOS) experience;
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, exercise good judgement and make decisions with minimal supervision;
  • Must be able to maintain positive working relationships with supervisors and colleagues;
  • Under US State Department requirements, the UK Government in the US may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Permanent Residents or A visa holders with EAD cards*.   • Relevant experience as post office counter clerk, or related field;
  • Understanding of Royal Mail products & services.

Working Hours:

The counter opens from 0830-1330 Tuesday through Thursday. Therefore, the successful candidate would need to be able to be in work and have the counter ready to open by 0830. There is a requirement to undertake some accounts work after opening hours.

This post is available for part time (18 hours per week).
